Un Monde Meilleur (A Better World): by Hom Nguyen

Our existence is a reflection of our relationship with others, from physical dimension, cultures and history. Those relationships create space to accommodate experience in our body, the collection of cultures that travel beyond one dimension together with the flow of everything, creating a dialogue between each realm, space and time.

Looking back into historical, the collection of alienation rose in people who took refuge from one to another country. The transition in economic, politic and society affected the structure inside our self. The relationship with different environments in various spaces develops how we identify the meaning of our self, our roles in society and our behavior. Taking the example of Vietnamese people who were affected by war, political and religious problems caused them to relocate from their homes to other places in different periods.

Emigration transform our bodies into experiencing space, containing the dialogue between our self and changing cultures by traveling through more than one space together with our mobility. It melts and transforms us into a pot of cultures, gives us a sense of insider and counts us as a part of society. On the contrary, mostly in modern states, the borderline of state on the map positions people on the move to be outsiders. The identity of one state and citizenship status has separated a group of people and makes them unable to be counted as citizens or part of that state until they grant citizenship. It separates us and them apart.

Hom Nguyen’s family moved from Vietnam and settled down in France. He as a Franco-Vietnamese artist of Vietnamese origin has merged French culture into his identity through everyday life and interaction with people around him. In the meanwhile, he keeps searching and studying Vietnamese culture through the memories of his mother who migrated from Hanoi. Because of the Asian blood flowing in his body and the feeling of longing for his hometown, his portrait paintings contain a lot of Asian faces, these faces have become the mirror image of his memory, the blurry image of his origin.

The searching for half of his identity, trying to understand it through repeating lines and brush lines crossing overlap over and over, link the stories and people together beyond place and time. Turn these portraits into another visual image connecting to someone else life. These portraits help us understand and visualize his unique identity as someone who has Vietnamese origin but grew up in France. They contain narrative of those people and his connection with the people from diverse cultures beyond borderline on the map where individuals create space for themselves through experiences, memories, and stories. Those connections create relationships that become reflections of one another in some ways.

The similarity of our faces and body parts, and the diversity in our facial and body shapes have become the element that contains our different stories and experience, connect them together and form into the body of cultural diversity where our identity and existence cannot be identified by the imaginary border of states.

Nationality cannot identify us who we are but our stories, the stories within each one of us that connect ourselves to the places where we belong. The imaginary border on the map and nationality have been erased by the combination of stories of individual identities, lifestyles and livelihoods which move beyond one space and transform into another. The struggle for Social equality where we respect individuality and diversity of cultures, against our fate, under the conventional narrative of borderline.

Un Monde Meilleur (A Better World)”. With this series the artist explores the turbulent twists and turns of the inner world in response to the exclusive movements that surround and pass through us. A journey of writing on the canvas, punctuated by the occurrence of a breathless dripping, with its invisible tensions, its forces, its points of all in the mirror of our lives. It is about giving space, making vibrate, the positive energy that lives in each of us. Resilience, the breadcrumb trail of our lives.

The exhibition “Un Monde Meilleur (A Better World)” will be held on the second floor of Art Centre Bldg., SAC Gallery from 26 July until 27 August 2022. The official opening ceremony will be held on 6 August, 6:00PM onwards.
