Hom Nguyen (b. 1972) is a well celebrated contemporary artist based in Paris, France. Although he was born in the French capital, his inspiration often comes from his root as a Vietnamese migrant as well as broader Asian culture. As a self-taught artist, Nguyen started his artistic career at a more mature age, which lends himself the ability to view the world with much deeper experience to be shared. Oftentimes, Nguyen’s works are known to be close up portraits of models from various unknown ethnicities, showing the diverse world we live in today, yet there is always a sense of longing for connection through the eyes of the models.

For his solo exhibition in Thailand, Hom Nguyen, for the first time, presents a new series of paintings that portray his instantly recognisable style of portraiture, with a burst of colours that brings out the artist’s street and urban art spirit. The dynamic from the splash of paint across the surface mirrors that of fireworks as though an outburst of celebration for happiness is in the air. In true Hom Nguyen style, the works are layered with complexity: Although the expressions of the subjects look soulful, these are actually happy paintings. Sometimes we carry past experiences with us, good or bad, but it helps us to find happiness today. So I want to remember those experiences too, commented the artist about his new series.

The exhibition “Un Monde Meilleur (A Better World)” will be held on the third floor of Art Connection (BTS Ploenchit Exit 1), Rosewood Bangkok Hotel, Ploenchit road, Bangkok from 14 September 2022 until 16 January 2023.
