Amornthep Mahamart Thai, b. 1970

Amornthep Mahamart was born in 1970. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Print Art from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University, in 1993. From his interest in mixed media art during the start of his career, Mahamart would later become an expert in ceramic art. He studied under Kamol Srivichainan at the Mae Rim Ceramics Factory, Chiang Mai, beginning in 1990, which gave him the opportunity to observe the process of designing various pieces, eventually developing into a passion for ceramics. Throughout his time studying Print Art in India and Painting in Japan, Mahamart would also learn from ceramics artists and experts in those countries. Upon his return to Thailand in 1996, he constructed his own studio where he would also bake his own ceramics, becoming a seller of various ceramic products. After about 5 additional years of study and practice, he would move on to create large sculptures, many of which are currently displayed in numerous locations in Thailand and abroad.

 

For Mahamart, the allure of ceramic arts lies in the diverse creative techniques, which incorporate knowledge of science and structural engineering. At the same time, they also bear a connection to history and culture, and are able to be displayed in harmony with nature. Ceramics work possesses elements of mixed media art within themselves, be they sculpturing, painting, or printing. Mahamart utilizes techniques from all three disciplines in his ceramic works not only in the production of these pieces, but also in terms of content, inspiration, and materials. Today, his art can be considered tools that help us consider the intimate relationship between all things, both in our lives and our environment.

อมรเทพ มหามาตร เกิดเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2513 จบปริญญาตรีในสาขาภาพพิมพ์ จากคณะวิจิตรศิลป์ มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2536 จากความสนใจศิลปะสื่อผสมในช่วงแรกของการทำงานศิลปะ สู่ความเชี่ยวชาญในการทำเซรามิก อมรเทพเรียนรู้จาก อ.กมล ศรีวิชัยนันท์ ที่โรงงานแม่ริมเซรามิก จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2533 ทำให้ได้เห็นกระบวนการออกแบบ ผลิตผลงานต่างๆ และเกิดความสนใจในเซรามิกมากขึ้น เมื่อได้เดินทางไปศึกษาต่อสาขาภาพพิมพ์ที่ประเทศอินเดียและสาขาจิตรกรรมที่ประเทศญี่ปุ่น ก็ได้เรียนรู้วิชาเซรามิกจากศิลปินและผู้เชี่ยวชาญจากที่นั่น เมื่อกลับมายังประเทศไทยในปี พ.ศ. 2539 ได้เริ่มสร้างสตูดิโอและเตาเผาเซรามิกด้วยตนเอง สู่อาชีพนักเซรามิกอย่างจริงจังจากการทำภาชนะต่างๆ และศึกษาด้วยตนเองเพิ่มเติมอีกประมาณ 5 ปี ก็ได้สร้างงานประติมากรรมขนาดใหญ่เพื่อติดตั้งในสถานที่ต่างๆ ทั้งในและต่างประเทศจนถึงปัจจุบัน

 

อมรเทพมองว่าศิลปะเซรามิกมีความน่าหลงใหลด้วยเทคนิคการสร้างสรรค์ที่หลากหลาย มีทั้งความเป็นวิทยาศาสตร์ งานโครงสร้าง เชื่อมโยงกับประวัติศาสตร์ วัฒนธรรม ทั้งยังสามารถติดตั้งอยู่อย่างกลมกลืนในพื้นที่ธรรมชาติ งานเซรามิกมีความเป็นศิลปะสื่อผสมในตัวเอง ทั้งประติมากรรม จิตรกรรม และภาพพิมพ์ ซึ่งอมรเทพก็ได้นำเอาเทคนิคแต่ละด้านมาใส่ไว้ในผลงานเซรามิกของตนเองด้วย โดยผลงานของเขาไม่จำกัดอยู่เพียงการสร้างชิ้นงาน แต่มองว่า ทั้งชิ้นงานและพื้นที่ติดตั้งจัดวางล้วนเป็นองค์ประกอบของผลงาน ผลงานของเขาจึงเชื่อมโยงกับพื้นที่ไม่ใช่เพียงในเชิงความงาม แต่ยังรวมถึงเนื้อหาสาระ ที่มาของการสร้างสรรค์ และวัสดุที่ใช้ ปัจจุบันการทำงานศิลปะของเขา ถือเป็นเครื่องมือที่ช่วยให้พิจารณาถึงความสัมพันธ์อันละเอียดลึกซึ้งในสิ่งต่างๆ ทั้งในชีวิตของตนเองและสิ่งแวดล้อม
