Trevor Foster (b. 1990) is a young artist of uncommon talent and drive who deftly adapts his draftsmanship across any media to which he turns his attention, be it ceramics, bronze, painting, wood, or printmaking. Foster was born in Seattle, Washington in the United States and attended the University of Washington for his BFA before relocating to Chiang Mai, Thailand, where he has spent the last several years working in his studio and collaborating with local artists.
Foster’s childhood, growing up in a family of naturalists, leaves its fingerprints in his current body of work where the natural world and the study of it take center stage. Each mezzotint embodies its own narrative showcasing the evolution of human thought alongside biological evolution. Thus Friedrich Nietzsche and Aristotle appear next to the perfect spiral of a conch shell or the patterning of zebras. To capture his images Foster uses the meticulous and somewhat esoteric medium of mezzotint in which a finely textured copper plate is burnished with specialised tools. Upon printing, the ink will not stick to the smooth areas, and the white of the paper showing through reveals the smooth regions of the plate. The creation of these images is the process of pulling light from darkness — a praxis of Enlightenment.
No piece illustrates this evolutionary pairing more explicitly than “Darwin and the Twelve Apostles,” which features the title character with twelve finches alighted across his suit jacket. It was observing the specialised beaks of the Galápagos finches that famously planted the seed of the theory of evolution in the mind of Charles Darwin. With each of the beautifully rendered birds whimsically surrounding the stoic scientist and the playful title, Foster challenges the way we compartmentalise schools of thought and shows the viewer a unity of man and beast.
