หากพูดถึงแมวคุณนึกอะไร?
หลายคนอาจตอบว่า ความอิสระ ความตลก ความขี้อ้อน ความน่ารักน่าเอ็นดู หรือความแสบสัน
แต่ในนิทรรศการเดี่ยวล่าสุดของ วิภู ศรีวิลาศ ศิลปินระดับโลก อย่าง “วิฬาร์ วิลิศมาหรา: Eleganza Extravaganza Cats” กลับมองว่า แมวสื่อถึง ‘ความหลากหลาย’ โดยหยิบแง่มุมวัยเด็กที่ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจาก ‘นางวิฬาร์’ ตัวละครในบทละครนอกเรื่องไชยเชษฐ์ ซึ่งเป็นแมวข้ารับใช้ที่คอยช่วยตัวเอกตลอดทั้งเรื่อง มาถ่ายทอดผ่านประติมากรรมรูปแมว 9 ชิ้นได้อย่างน่าสนใจ
หากสังเกตให้ดี ไชยเชษฐ์เป็นบทละครนอกที่มีมาตั้งแต่ยุคสมัยที่ละครนอกต้องแสดงโดยนักแสดงเพศชายเท่านั้น แต่บทของนางแมวหรือนางวิฬาร์ มักถูกพรรณนาด้วยถ้อยคำว่าโอ้อวดและเต็มไปด้วยจริตจะก้าน สิ่งเหล่านี้จึงทำให้วิภูตระหนักได้ว่า นี่คือความทรงจำแรกของเขาเกี่ยวกับ DRAG (Dressed as a girl)
ทั้งหมดทั้งมวลถ่ายทอดเป็นประติมากรรมเซรามิกรูปแมวทั้ง 9 ชิ้น ตกแต่งด้วยสีทอง และประดับประดาด้วยดอกไม้ แต่งหน้าแต่งตัวอย่างสวยงาม เช่น ปัดแก้มสีชมพู และติดขนตาปลอมช่วยสะท้อนการแสดงออกของ Drag Queen นอกจากการหยิบเรื่องราวของแมว และวรรณคดีมาเล่าแล้ว วิภูยังต้องการยกย่องการมีอยู่ของอัตลักษณ์เควียร์อีกด้วย
แมว ความงาม และความหลากหลายในนิทรรศการ “วิฬาร์ วิลิศมาหรา: Eleganza Extravaganza Cats” มีอะไรบ้าง?
ยกตัวอย่างงานผลงาน Midnight Gold แมวดำเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความฉลาด ฉายภาพความสวยหวานด้วยรอยยิ้ม ประดับประดาด้วยดอกไม้รอบตัว สื่อถึงความสวยงาม และวิลิศมาหราแบบ Drag Queen
Aurora ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจากชุดแมวที่คุณแพนไจน่า ฮีลส์ (Pangina Heals) หรือปันปัน นาคประเสริฐ Drag Queen ชื่อดังชาวไทยหนึ่งในผู้เข้าประกวดรายการ RuPaul's Drag Race เคยสวมใส่ นอกจากนี้หากมองที่ชิ้นงานจะพบว่า Aurora กำลังชูสองนิ้วแสดงถึงการเป็นมิตรและทักทาย
Gilded Lily สื่อถึงแมวสวยหวาน ประดับประดาด้วยดอกไม้หลากหลาย มีเส้นสีทองที่ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากจิตรกรรมฝาผนังของไทย
ทั้งนี้ วิภูเล่าว่า เอกลักษณ์ของประติมากรรมทั้งเก้าล้วนอออกแบบผสมผสานจากคาแรกเตอร์ Drag Queen ที่เขาเจอมาในชีวิต เช่น Snow Queen สื่อถึงแมวสวยๆ ตัวสีขาวมีแก้มสีชมพู แต่งหน้านิดหน่อยให้อารมณ์ความสวยแบบใสๆ แต่หากมองดีๆ จะพบว่าเธอก็มีความเปรี้ยวซ่อนอยู่ ส่วน Face I เป็นภาพแมวหล่อ สื่อถึงคาแรกเตอร์ Drag Queen ที่เมื่อแสดงเสร็จแล้ว บางคนจะมีภาพลักษณ์ที่หล่อเหลา ขณะที่ผลงาน Godfather สื่อถึง Drag Queen ที่มีพลัง และ Mask ทำให้นึกถึง Drag Queen ที่แต่งเป็นซูเปอร์ฮีโร่

When we talk about cats, what comes to mind?
Many people may mention freedom, humor, mischief, cuteness, or playfulness.
In the exhibition "Eleganza Extravaganza Cats", the latest exhibition by Vipoo Srivilasa, an artist of global acclaim, cats are portrayed differently. The cat symbolizes 'diversity' by taking the perspective of a child inspired by the character 'Nang Wilar’, a supporting cat character in the Thai folk opera ‘Chaiyachet’. This cat serves the protagonist throughout the story and conveys the theme through a collection of 9 cat sculptures, adding an interesting dimension.
If you look carefully, Chaiyachet is a Thai folk opera that Nang Maew is always portrayed as being over the top and often full of mannerisms. The original play was written at the time when all-male cast was common, therefore the character was portrayed exclusively by men. So, In retrospect, Vipoo realizes that watching this play as a young boy was his first memory of seeing a man in drag.
Overall, depicted as nine ceramic cat sculptures adorned in elaborate costumes and decorated in gold, these cats embody the flamboyant and unconventional beauty of drag queens. Alongside drawing from cat stories and literature, Vipoo also aims to celebrate the freedom and self-expression of queer identity.
What do Cats, Beauty, and Diversity represent in the exhibition "Eleganza Extravaganza Cats"?
Midnight Gold: the black cat symbolizes intelligence and conveys an image of sweet beauty with a smile, adorned with flowers to emphasize beauty and the magic of a drag queen.
Aurora was inspired by the cat costume that Ms. Pangina Heals, a famous Thai drag queen and one of the contestants on RuPaul's Drag Race, once wore. Additionally, the ceramic sculpture of Aurora shows her giving two fingers up, symbolizing friendliness and greeting.
Gilded Lily represents a sweet, beautiful cat adorned with various flowers, with gold lines inspired by Thai murals.
Furthermore, Vipoo mentioned that the exhibition features nine ceramic sculptures representing drag queen characters he has encountered in his life. For instance, ‘Snow Queen’, which represents a beautiful cat with a white body with pink cheeks, wearing a little makeup, gives the impression of innocent beauty. However, upon closer inspection, you will find that she has a hidden sassiness. ‘Face I’, depicts a handsome cat, referring to the drag queen character who, after performing, exudes a handsome image. The ‘Godfather’ represents a drag queen with power, and ‘Mask’ reminds of a drag queen who dresses up as a superhero.
