Transforming Traditions: La Korn Nok x Drag

“วิภู ศรีวิลาส” ศิลปินเซรามิกระดับอินเตอร์หยิบเอา “นางวิฬาร์” ตัวละครแมวพี่เลี้ยงในละครนอกเรื่อง “ไชยเชษฐ์” มาดีไซน์ให้ดูน่ารักร่วมสมัย เป็นนางเอกของ “วิฬาร์ วิลิศมาหรา: Eleganza Extravaganza Cats” ผลงานชุดล่าสุดของเขา ที่กำลังจัดแสดงอยู่ที่ SAC Gallery ขณะนี้

เบื้องหลังของประติมากรรมเจ้าเหมียวเซรามิกหน้าตาบ้องแบ๊วสดใส ทรงเสน่ห์ แต่งตัววิลิศมาหราสมชื่อนิทรรศการ ยังมีหลากเรื่องราวประกอบสร้างอยู่ในชิ้นงาน ไม่ว่าเป็นการแสดงเก่าแก่ของไทยอย่างละครนอก ผสานเข้ากับคาแรกเตอร์ของ Drag Queen แฝงเรื่องราวของเควียร์และชุมชนผู้มีความหลากหลายทางเพศ ซึ่งอันที่จริงแล้ว หากย้อนกับไปดูที่ว่าจะพบว่าละครนอกของไทยกับ Drag (Dressed Resembling A Girl) จากตะวันตกมีไอเดียที่คล้ายคลึงกันไม่น้อย แม้จะเกิดขึ้นต่างที่และต่างสไตล์การแสดงก็ตาม

เมื่อหมุนเวลาย้อนไปในสมัยอยุธยา เชื่อกันว่าละครนอกเกิดขึ้นในช่วงเวลานี้ เป็นการแสดงที่บังคับให้ผู้แสดงต้องเป็นเพศชาย ดำเนินเรื่องอย่างตลกโปกฮา แม้จะบทบาทของตัวละครในเรื่องจะเป็นผู้หญิง แต่เหล่านักแสดงชายก็จะแต่งองค์ทรงเครื่องอย่างตัวนาง เพื่อให้สมกับบทบาทที่ได้รับ โดยละครนอกในขณะนั้นมีวรรณกรรมหลายเรื่องมาใช้เป็นบทในการแสดง ที่คุ้นกัน เช่น สังข์ทอง, คาวี, ไชยเชษฐ์ ฯลฯ

ขณะที่อีกส่วนผสมสำคัญที่วิภูใช้ในงานของเขา คือคาแรกเตอร์ของเหล่า Drag Queen นักแสดงที่เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ Drag ศิลปะการแสดงจากอีกซีกโลกหนึ่งที่เริ่มขึ้นในเวลาไล่เลี่ยกับละครนอก เป็นละครเวทีที่นักแสดงชายแต่งกายอย่างเวอร์วังอลังการเพื่อรับบทบาทเป็นตัวละครหญิง เพราะโรงละครไม่อนุญาตให้เพศหญิงแสดงด้วยข้อจำกัดทางจารีตศาสนา 

อาจกล่าวได้ว่าความบันเทิงทั้งสองถือเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการแสดงที่เปิดพื้นที่ให้กับความหลากหลายทางเพศ หันสปอตไลต์มายังชาวชุมชน LGBTQ+ ได้เป็นตัวเองอย่างเฉิดฉาย ก่อนที่จะได้รับการยอมรับในความแตกต่างอย่างเช่นปัจจุบัน

ขณะที่การแสดง Drag ในทุกวันนี้กลายเป็นสิ่งที่สังคมคุ้นชินมากขึ้น ผิดจากหลายปีก่อนที่ยังไกลจากการรับรู้ มีรายการเรียลิตี้โชว์เกี่ยวกับ Drag Queen ทางโทรทัศน์มากมาย อีกทั้งไม่ได้จำกัดเพียงเพศชายเท่านั้นที่เป็นผู้แสดง หากแต่ยังโอบรับให้ผู้หญิงได้กลับมามีโอกาสแต่งตัวอย่างจัดเต็มเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ Drag อีกด้วย 

กลับมาที่ SAC Gellery ผลงานครั้งนี้วิภูพาผู้ชมมาทำความรู้จักกับนางวิฬาร์ในอีกรูปแบบหนึ่ง ที่ไม่ใช่เป็นเครื่องประดับศีรษะรูปแมวดำอย่างที่เห็นชินตาในการแสดงเรื่องไชยเชษฐ์ แต่พาแมวดำและแมวขาวมาแต่งองค์ทรงเครื่องเสียใหม่ เป็นนางวิฬาร์ที่ได้แรงบันดาลใจจากคอสตูมของผองเพื่อน Drag Queen ที่สวมชุดและเครื่องประดับอลังการ แต่งหน้าติดขนตาปลอม เพิ่มดอกไม้บนชุด ประดับประดาให้เจ้าเหมียวตัวต่างๆ ในนิทรรศการ พร้อมกับอากัปกิริยาของเจ้าเหมียวตัวต่างๆ ที่แสดงถึงความหลากหลายมีจริตจะก้าน บางตัวป้องปากคุย Gossip อย่างออกรส บางตัวชูสองนิ้วน่ารักน่าชัง หรือไม่ก็กำลังยิ้มสดใสคล้ายกับเชื้อเชิญเหล่าทาสแมวมาลูบหัว

 

เพราะความหลากหลายในนิทรรศการ “วิฬาร์ วิลิศมาหรา: Eleganza Extravaganza Cats” มีมากมายเกินจะเอ่ยหมด และเต็มไปด้วยความคิดสร้างสรรค์เกินจะพรรณนา ชวนมาสัมผัสผลงานศิลปะของศิลปินระดับโลกได้ที่ชั้นหนึ่ง SAC Gallery ซึ่งจัดแสดงถึงวันที่ 16 มีนาคม 2024 เท่านั้น

"Vipoo Srivilasa", an international ceramic artist, who reimagined "Nang Wilar", the cat character from the Thai drama "Chaiyachet", and designed it with a cute and contemporary aesthetic, which was the protagonist of “Eleganza Extravaganza Cats”, his recent exhibition at SAC Gallery.

Behind the bright-faced, charming, and elegantly dressed ceramic cat sculptures. This captivating figure blends elements of Thai cultural performances such as "La Korn Nok" with the character of a Drag Queen, reflecting the spectrum of queerness and LGBTQ+ communities.

 

Upon reflection, it becomes evident that "La Korn Nok" and "Drag" (Dressed Resembling A Girl) share strikingly similar ideas, despite their differences in origin and style of performance.

"La Korn Nok" is believed to have originated during the Ayutthaya period. These performances required only male actors, despite portraying female characters. During that era, "La Korn Nok" often incorporated renowned literary works into its performances, including Sangthong, Kawee, Tao Chaiyachet, and others.

Another important element in Vipoo's artwork is the characters of Drag Queens, who are part of Drag, a performing art originating from Europe that began around the same time as La Korn Nok. It is a theatrical performance in which male actors dress lavishly to portray female characters, stemming from religious restrictions that prohibited women from performing in theaters.

Both forms of entertainment serve as starting points for performances that open up space for gender diversity, shining the spotlight on the LGBTQ+ community to express themselves authentically. At the time, they were not accepted as they are today.

At present, drag performances have become more familiar to society, a departure from the past when they were still far from being realized. There are many drag queen reality shows on television. Moreover, it is not limited to only male performers; women also have the opportunity to fully dress and be part of Drag as well.

In this exhibition by Vipoo, he introduces the audience to “Nang Wilar” in a different style. It’s not a black cat-shaped headdress as seen in Tao Chaiyachet. Instead, the artist took black and white cats and adorned them with new outfits.

 

“Nang Wilar” is portrayed as inspired by the costumes of Drag Queens, wearing extravagant outfits and accessories. The cats in his exhibition feature makeup with false lashes and dresses adorned with flowers. Along with the reactions of various cats that show diversity and demeanor, some cats act as if they are covering their mouths, and some cats are talking about gossip. Meanwhile, another cat holds up two fingers, smiling brightly, inviting cat lovers to rub their heads.

Because of the diversity in the exhibition “Eleganza Extravaganza Cats,” there are too many to mention. and full of creativity beyond description. Come and experience the artworks of world-class artists at the SAC Gallery on the first floor, which is on display until 16 March 2024.
