Meow-gical Misconceptions: Debunking the Black Cat Curse

แต่ไหนแต่ไรมา แมวดำมักมาคู่กับโชคร้าย หลายวัฒนธรรมในโลกเชื่อกันว่า หากใครเลี้ยงหรือได้พบแมวดำจะทำให้เจอกับสิ่งไม่ดี และแน่นอนว่ารวมถึงความเชื่อของคนไทยในสมัยหนึ่งด้วย แต่มีหลักฐานบางอย่างบ่งชี้ว่า ในอดีตแมวดำเคยเป็นสัตว์นำโชคตามความเชื่อของคนไทยโบราณ ก่อนที่วัฒนธรรมจากต่างชาติจะแพร่เข้ามาจนแมวดำถูกมองเป็นสัตว์ที่นำพาโชคร้ายในที่สุด

 

 

หลักฐานที่ว่าคือตำราโบราณของไทยที่สันนิษฐานว่าเขียนขึ้นในช่วงต้นกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ เนื้อหาระบุชัดเจนว่า “แมวดำปลอดตลอดล้ำ เลี้ยงไว้จะดีเป็นเศรษฐีมีทรัพย์หลาย” ซึ่งดูขัดกับความเชื่อของผู้คนในสมัยถัดมาอย่างสิ้นเชิง และน่าสนใจว่า ช่วงเวลาของเอกสารดังกล่าวพอดีกับเวลาที่รัชกาลที่ 2 พระราชนิพนธ์บทละครนอกเรื่องไชยเชษฐ์ ซึ่งมี "นางวิฬาร์" แมวพี่เลี้ยงของนางเอกเป็นหนึ่งในตัวละครของเรื่อง หากสังเกตจากศีรษะนางแมว (หัวโขนนางวิฬาร์) ที่ใช้ในการแสดงเรื่องไชยเชษฐ์ จะพบว่า นางวิฬาร์มีลักษณะตรงกับ “แมวโกญจา” ซึ่งตามตำราระบุว่า มีขนสีดำละเอียดและนัยน์ตาสีดอกบวบ

 

เวลาผ่านไปกว่า 200 ปี แมวดำจากละครนอกเรื่องไชยเชษฐ์ถูกนำมาเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้งานศิลปะของ วิภู ศรีวิลาส ที่กำลังจัดแสดงนิทรรศการ “วิฬาร์ วิลิศมาหรา: Eleganza Extravaganza Cats” แน่นอนว่าในบรรดาแมวเซรามิก 9 ตัว ก็มีแมวสีดำปะปนเข้ามาด้วย เหมือนกับแมวที่เขาเลี้ยงไว้ซึ่งมีทั้งสีขาวและสีดำ

 

SAC Gallery ชวนรู้จักแมวดำทั้งสามตัว ต่างหน้าตาและคาแรกเตอร์ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น “Midnight Gold” ผลงานชิ้นแรกเริ่มของศิลปิน นอกจากจุดเด่นของดวงตาสีขาวดำที่คล้ายกับว่าแมวกำลังมีชีวิตอยู่ อีกความน่ารักคือท่าทางเอียงคอเล็กน้อย ยิ้มแย้มต้อนรับ นั่งรอคอยคนมาลูบหัว 

 

ตัวถัดมาคือ “Golden Panther” แมวดำหูขาวมีรอยสักรูปหัวใจที่หู หน้าตาทะเล้น ศิลปินได้แรงบันดาลใจมาจากแมวดำบางตัวที่มีสีขาวแซมอยู่ตามจุดต่างๆ ของร่างกาย หากมองผิวเผินจะเหมือนกับว่ามันกำลังเลียขาอยู่ แต่จริงๆ แล้วมันกำลังป้องปากซุบซิบกับแมวตัวอื่นอยู่ต่างหาก

 

ขณะที่แมวดำตัวสุดท้ายมีชื่อว่า “Shadowstrike” วิภูออกแบบให้ตัวนี้มีตาเป็นรูปตัวคน เหมือนกับกำลังมองเห็นเหล่าเพื่อนๆ ตามตัวยังประดับประดาไปด้วยมีเพื่อนๆ และครอบครัวที่คอยสนับสนุน พร้อมทั้งยืนชู 2 นิ้วอย่างเริงร่ามีความสุข

 

 

ไม่เพียงแต่บรรดาแมวดำของวิภูที่น่ารักและช่วยสร้างรอยยิ้มให้กับผู้พบเห็น เพราะหากใครเลี้ยงหรือเคยเล่นกับแมวดำ จะพบว่าพวกมันฉลาด ขี้เล่น และไม่เคยเป็นพิษเป็นภัยกับใครจริงๆ

Since ancient times, black cats have been associated with bad luck. Many cultures around the world believe that if you meet or raise a black cat, it will cause you to experience misfortune. This belief was also prevalent among Thai people at one time.

 

However, there is evidence suggesting that in the past, black cats were considered lucky animals. Before the influence of foreign cultures, black cats were viewed as animals that brought bad luck.

 

Ancient Thai texts, assumed to have been written in the early Rattanakosin period, state that “It would be good to raise a black cat. Raise them and you will be rich and have wealth” contradicting the beliefs of people in later times. Interestingly, the period of the said document coincides with King Rama II’s writing of the Tao Chaiyachet drama. This drama includes “Nang Wilar” the heroine’s cat, as one of the characters in the story, The cat mask used in the Tao Chaiyachet show shares a color similar to that of the “Konja Cat” (Pure black cat) which has fine black fur and yellow eyes.

 

More than 200 years have passed, and the black cat from Tao Chaiyachet’s drama has served as inspiration for the artwork of Vipoo Sriwilasa, currently exhibited in “Eleganza Extravaganza Cats.” Among the 9 ceramic cats, there were also black cats mixed in, originating from the cat he raised, which was both white and black.

“Midnight Gold,” the artist’s earliest work. With its black and white eyes, it looks alive. Another adorable feature is the slight tilt of the head, as if smiling, sitting and waiting for someone to stroke its head.

 

The next one is ‘Golden Panther,’ a black cat with white ears and a heart-shaped tattoo on its ear. It has a cheeky face. The artist modeled it after some black cats that have white spots on various parts of their bodies. When glanced at quickly, it appears as though it's licking its legs, but it's actually shielding its mouth and gossiping with other cats.

 

The last black cat is called “Shadowstrike.” Vipoo designed this one to have eyes in the shape of a person like seeing friends. The body is also decorated with supportive friends and family, and it stands happily holding up two fingers.

 

Not only are Viphu’s black cats cute and capable of bringing smiles to those who see them, but also anyone who raises or plays with black cats will find that they are smart, playful, and harmless.
