ทหารชายแดน พาหนะของรหัสพันธุกรรม การวนซ้ำของโชคชะตาที่ไม่อาจกำหนดโดย ปฐมพล เทศประทีป

มนต์-ปฐมพล เทศประทีป ศิลปินสื่อผสมชาวไทย คือเจ้าของผลงานจอเล็กๆ แสดงภาพเคลื่อนไหวที่ถ่ายด้วยฟิล์มหนังขนาด 8 มม. (Super 8) ฉายภาพของทหารเกณฑ์นายหนึ่งกำลังนั่งขัดรองเท้าบูตไปมาวนเป็นลูปซ้ำ 8 วินาที ท่ามกลางความมืดในห้องจัดแสดงด้านในของนิทรรศการกลุ่ม “Dynasty | Can we shape our Destiny?” 

 

“The Shine of My Boots” คือชื่อของงานชิ้นที่ว่า ซึ่งเกิดจากจินตนาการและการสร้างขึ้นมาใหม่ ที่ได้แรงบันดาลใจหลังจากฟังเรื่อง “หินคงกระพัน” เรื่องสยองขวัญจากรายการ THE GHOST RADIO 

เรื่องเล่านี้ถูกบอกต่อกันมาในหมู่ทหาร ที่ประจำการในชายแดนภาคใต้ของประเทศไทย ถึงการเสียชีวิตอย่างลึกลับที่เกิดขึ้นหลายครั้งของทหารหลายนายที่แอบเก็บหินลึกลับก้อนหนึ่งไว้ หินก้อนนี้เคยเป็นของผู้นำกบฏ ผู้ที่เชื่อกันว่าไม่เคยพ่ายแพ้ในสนามรบ

 

“เรื่องเล่าเชิงประวัติศาสตร์คือเรื่องเล่าที่มีพลัง ทั้งประวัติศาสตร์ส่วนรวมและส่วนตัวมนุษย์วิวัฒนาการมาเป็นสัตว์สังคม มีการรวมกลุ่มแบ่งปันผลประโยชน์ตลอดเวลา เรื่องเล่าทําให้สังคมหล่อหลอมรวมเป็นหนึ่งเดียวกัน พัฒนามาเป็นอธิปไตยของรัฐชาติ ราชอาณาจักร การปกป้อง วีรบุรุษ ความมั่นคง การควบคุม ไว้ปกครอง เรื่องราวและกฎเกณฑ์ศาสนาก็เป็นส่วนสําคัญที่ถูกนํามาใช้ควบคุมสังคมในเชิงศีลธรรม จริยธรรม”

 

 

ศิลปินตั้งใจฉายภาพสภาวะ OCD ที่เกิดมาจากความวิตกกังวลและความกลัวต่อความไม่แน่นอน ที่กําลังจะมาถึงของทหารชั้นผู้น้อย ซึ่งเป็นหน่วยย่อยของกองทัพ เป็นกําลังพลที่ไม่สามารถควบคุมหรือกําหนดทิศทางในการทําภารกิจเสี่ยงตายต่างๆ ได้ ผ่านผลงานที่ประกอบด้วยลายเส้นนับไม่ถ้วน เรียงต่อกันร่วมร้อยเฟรมเป็นแอนิเมชัน สั้นไหวไปมาเหมือนภาพซ้ำ เป็นการวนลูปที่สั้นแต่วนไปไม่รู้จบ 

 

“สําหรับผมเป็นความสัมพันธ์ที่กลับไปกลับมาระหว่างการทําสมาธิ พิจารณาสิ่งที่อยู่ตรงหน้าในปัจจุบัน กับบริบทพื้นที่ในแกลเลอรีที่เปิดพื้นที่เปิดให้เวลากับผลงานในเวลาอันสั้นหรือยาวได้อย่างอิสระ” ศิลปินเล่าถึงสิ่งที่ซ่อนอยู่ในงาน

 

ในภาพใหญ่ สิ่งที่คนเราล้วนต้องพบเจอไม่ต่างอะไรกับสิ่งที่ทหารชั้นผู้น้อยต้องเผชิญ ซึ่งศิลปินมองว่าโชคชะตาเป็นเรื่องที่โยงเข้ากับความไม่แน่นอน โดยมีที่มาจากปัจจัยต่างๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเหตุการณ์ทางธรรมชาติ หรือการวิวัฒนาการของมนุษย์ 

 

“คําว่าโชคชะตาอาจจะถูกนํามาใช้ในฐานะสิ่งที่นอกเหนือการรับรู้และควบคุม และเป็นความกลัวภายในต่อสิ่งที่เรายังไม่สามารถรับรู้ได้” มนต์แสดงทัศนะ 

 

ในมุมมองของเขา โชคชะตายังหมายถึงการที่ตัวเองอยู่ในฐานะสิ่งมีชีวิตหนึ่ง ทำหน้าที่เป็นเพียง "พาหนะของรหัสพันธุกรรม" ที่สืบทอดส่งต่อกันจากรุ่นสู่รุ่นเท่านั้น ขณะที่เผ่าพันธุ์ของมนุษย์นั้นต่างกำลังพยายามเอาชนะโชคชะตาด้วยการขยายเผ่าพันธุ์ให้มากที่สุด เพื่อกระจายความเสี่ยง และดำรงอยู่ในโลกที่เต็มไปด้วยความไม่แน่นอนจากสถานการณ์ต่างๆ เช่น ภัยพิบัติหรือการฆ่าล้างเผ่าพันธุ์กันเอง

 

แม้มนุษย์อาจไม่ใช่ผู้กำหนดโชคชะตาตั้งแต่เริ่มลืมตาดูโลกว่า จะเกิดในประเทศไหนหรือครอบครัวแบบใด แต่หลังจากเติบโตขึ้นและมีจิตสำนึกเป็นของตัวเอง เขาเชื่อว่า มนุษย์จะค่อยๆ สามารถกำหนดความแน่นอนของชีวิตได้ หากแต่จะมากน้อยแค่ไหน ย่อมขึ้นอยู่กับสภาพแวดล้อมและความสามารถในการปรับตัว 

 

 

“บางสิ่งบางอย่างไม่สามารถฝืนธรรมชาติของการเปลี่ยนแปลงได้ ตามที่เห็นในประวัติศาสตร์ที่ผ่านมา มนุษย์ยังคงมีวิวัฒนาการต่อไป แต่แน่นอนว่าบางสิ่งอาจจะทําลายตัวเอง บางสิ่งฟื้นคืนชีพ สิ่งใหม่ก็อาจจะเกิดขึ้นมา มันอาจจะเป็นการวนลูป สําหรับผมมันเป็นเรื่องที่เกินจะปรารถนาหรือกําหนดได้”

 

การวนไปมาของผลงาน “The Shine of My Boots” ที่แสดงการกระทำของทหารชั้นผู้น้อยคนหนึ่ง จึงอาจเป็นเหมือนการวิพากษ์ไปถึงการส่งต่อสืบทอดบางสิ่งบางอย่างที่ผู้รับจำยอมต้องทำ

 

“สิ่งที่ผมอยากให้ความสําคัญคือวัฒนธรรมในการเก็บรักษา Archive ประวัติศาสตร์ การให้คุณค่าของเหตุการณ์ที่สร้างการเปลี่ยนแปลง เพื่อการเรียนรู้ ยํ้าเตือน และเยียวยาบาดแผลของประวัติศาสตร์ที่ยังไม่หายสนิท บางครั้งอาจจะต้องเก็บรักษาสําหรับการต่อสู้เพื่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงในทิศทางที่ดีกว่า”

 

 

ท้ายที่สุด ระหว่างสิ่งที่เรากําหนดได้อย่าง Dynasty กับ Destiny ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่เลือกไม่ได้ คุณจะเลือกอะไร

 

“คําถามนี้อาจจะเป็นคําตอบภายในตัวคําถามเอง ในบริบทนี้ทั้งสองสิ่งอาจจะคล้ายไก่กับไข่ไม่ว่าจะโอนเอียงไปทางไหน อีกสิ่งก็จะอยู่ตรงนั้นอย่างหลีกเลี่ยงไม่ได้”

Borderland Tales and the Vehicle of Genetic Code: The Infinite Loop of an Unshaped Destiny by Pathompon Tesprateep

 

Pathompon Tesprateep, a Thai mixed-media artist, presents a work consisting of a small screen playing an eight-second loop of Super 8 film footage. The moving image shows a conscripted soldier repeatedly polishing his boots, set in the dim light of an inner room at the group exhibition Dynasty | Can We Shape Our Destiny?

 

"The Shine of My Boots" is the title of the work, a reimagined scene inspired by the ghost story Hin Khong Krapun  (Invincible Stone) from the Thai radio programme The Ghost Radio. The tale, passed among soldiers stationed along Thailand’s southern border, tells of the mysterious deaths of several servicemen who secretly kept a strange stone. The stone had once belonged to a rebel leader believed never to have been defeated in battle.

 

 

“For me, historical narratives, both personal and collective, carry a powerful weight. As social creatures, humans evolved by forming groups and sharing resources. Stories have always played a role in binding societies together, eventually shaping the sovereignty of nation states, monarchies, ideals of protection, heroism, stability and governance. Religious narratives and moral codes have also long been tools to organise and control societies through shared ethics,” the artist explains.

 

Through his work, Tesprateep explores the obsessive compulsive state born of anxiety and fear of the unknown that lies ahead for a low-ranking soldier, a unit within the army without the power to steer or control the life-threatening missions assigned to them. The piece consists of hundreds of hand-drawn frames, each linked together into a short animation that flickers like a repeating vision, an endlessly looping cycle.

 

“The repetition feels meditative at first, but over time it begins to suggest something more fragile, a mental state on the edge. In a gallery setting, where time becomes fluid, this short obsessive loop can be watched for hours or passed by in a second,” he says.

 

 

On a larger scale, the challenges faced by low-ranking soldiers mirror those all humans encounter. To the artist, destiny is inherently tied to uncertainty, shaped by factors ranging from natural events to human evolution.

 

“What we call ‘destiny’ might simply be a name for what lies beyond our perception or control. It is a way we deal with the fear of not knowing,” Tesprateep reflects.

 

From his perspective, destiny also means being nothing more than a vehicle of genetic code passed down from generation to generation, while humankind as a species struggles to overcome destiny by reproducing as widely as possible to spread risk and survive in a world full of uncertainty, from natural disasters to acts of genocide.

 

Although humans cannot choose the circumstances of their birth, such as the country or family they are born into, Tesprateep believes that as people grow and gain self-awareness they can begin to exert some control over the certainty of their lives. How much depends on the environment and adaptability.

 

“Some things cannot resist the natural course of change. History shows us that humans continue to evolve, while certain values fade, collapse or are reborn in new forms. It may all move in cycles, far beyond our desire or control.”

 

The repetitive act shown in "The Shine of My Boots"  thus becomes a critique of the passing down of certain practices, duties the recipient has no choice but to perform.

 

“What I do believe in, however, is the importance of preserving the practice of preservation itself, the culture of archiving, the remembering of histories, the recognition of moments that have led to rupture or transformation. These are not just for the sake of nostalgia, but for learning, for reminding, and sometimes, for healing wounds that remain unresolved. In some cases, preservation becomes part of the struggle toward change, not to keep things as they are, but to move forward with memory as a form of resistance.”

 

In the end, if you had to choose, which would you embrace, something beyond your control like a dynasty or a destiny?

 

“Perhaps this question already contains its own answer. In this context, both may resemble the old riddle of the chicken and the egg. Whichever way one leans, the other inevitably remains, present, shadowing, unavoidable.”
