We are writing to you according to the exhibition "Dear Sir/Madam, Best wishes from Bangkok",the first online exclusive exhibition of SAC Gallery. This exhibition featuring artwork of 4 Thai artists, communicating the Thainess' stories, that is not in the main stream media. This Thainess, however, is an aspect that reflects what has happened - and is still ongoing through the artwork of the artists who were born, grew up and living in the kingdom - culturally diverse as know as Thailand

In Thailand, aside from regional division - North, Central, Northeast, and South, there are also subcultures, inhabiting in different regions, that Thai people still have to exchange and learn with each other endlessly. 

As in the work of Kanchalee Ngamdamronk, young and emerging textile artist - in this new series she selected of materials from the industry ”Plastic sheet” as a medium for learning the way of handicrafts of the Lisu tribe. The result is a artwork that still retains the identity of the Lisu pattern on the plastic.

When considering the art of textiles, another artist who specialised in this medium is none other than Patipat Chaiwitesh with a unique way of thinking through textile art. For him, no less important than the complexity of the textile technique or material is texture. The two words share the same root, making textile and texture always co-existent. The creation of surfaces is therefore a philosophy in his artwork.

In exhibition, Patipat go back to the simple beginning of the material ”Cotton” - that we are well acquainted with, through the outfit in our daily life. In addition to its industrial use, in Thailand, cotton is widely used in the cultural beliefs of the artist's homeland in important ceremonies such as the destiny ceremony, the Bai Sri Su Kwan ceremony which are cultural identity ceremony. Which in the tourism industry, this intangible locality has been attached along with local handicraft products in the form of souvenirs for visitors. The artist takes us back to the origin before the material is transformed into a cultural product, allowing us to see the fibers and patterns being woven into fabrics.

Thidarat Chantachua is a female artist born and raised in Bangkok. Wearing a hijab, people stereotype that Tidarat is a Muslim from the three southern provinces. which is an area where violence has continued for ten years. This led to a prejudice against the people of the same country that Muslims were extremists and eventually led to fear of Muslims. This does not just happen on a scale in only a small country like Thailand. However, it happens in other areas such as in Palestine. Conflict events that lead to violence in the level of ”war” in which religion is involved. As a result, Muslims are stereotyped from the world as a dangerous group. In fact, not all Muslims agree to this violence, but it is inevitable to be judged and imposed on "others", which in turn inspired Thidarat to create a series of works. "In the Name of Peace" to reflect the view of the event to the audience as Muslims living in Thailand.

Thai people are bound by beliefs and superstitions, especially the matter of numbers. We often see the strong belief of Thai people in what they believe to be sacred. From travelling to worship and pay respect to ask for fortune - as Thai people call it for short, ”Khor huay” (Wish for winning lottery numbers) with the hope that the lottery results that will be announced every 1st and 16th will make them a new millionaire and have a better quality of life. Kitikong Tilokwattanotai, an experienced Thai artist, focused on Thai numbers as an element of abstract works through acrylic and lacquer on canvas technique, which was a successful form of work from exhibitions in Singapore and France.

Dear sir/madam is an electronic letter (E-mail) from Thailand sent to audiences around the world - to tell the story in different aspects that occurred in Thailand Even if foreign audiences are unable to come to Thailand right now, SAC Gallery will take you on a virtual trip to Thailand! Through the works of 4 Thai artists from 4-18 March 2022 via Artsy.

นิทรรศการออนไลน์ เอ็กคลูซีฟ นิทรรศการแรกในปีนี้ของ เอส เอ ซี แกลเลอรี ที่เราได้พาศิลปินไทยทั้ง 4 ออกมาสื่อสารเรื่องราวความเป็นไทย ในมุมมองที่ไม่ได้อยู่ในสื่อประชาสัมพันธ์การท่องเที่ยว หากแต่เป็นแง่มุมที่สะท้อนสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นและยังคงดำเนินอยู่ ผ่านผลงานศิลปะโดยศิลปินที่เกิด เติบโต และอาศัยอยู่ในแผ่นดินไทย ดินแดนที่มีความหลากหลายทางวัฒนธรรม 

นอกเหนือจากการแบ่งด้วยภูมิภาค เหนือ กลาง อีสาน ใต้ แล้วนั้น ยังมีกลุ่มวัฒนธรรมย่อยที่อาศัยอยู่ในภูมิภาคต่างๆ ที่คนไทยเองก็ยังคงต้องแลกเปลี่ยนเรียนรู้ซึ่งกันและกันไม่รู้จบ ดังในงานของ กรรณชลี งามดำรงค์ ศิลปินที่ทำงานเกี่ยวกับ textile มาโดยตลอด และครั้งนี้เป็นการเลือกใช้วัสดุจากอุตสาหกรรมอย่าง ”แผ่นพลาสติก” มาเป็นสื่อกลางในการเรียนรู้วิถีของงานหัตถกรรมแบบของชาวเผ่าลีซู เกิดเป็นผลงานที่ยังคงเอกลักษณ์ของรูปแบบลายผ้าลีซูบนผืนพลาสติก

เมื่อพิจารณาถึงศิลปะสิ่งทอ ศิลปินอีกคนหนึ่งที่เชียวชาญในสื่อนี้จะเป็นใครไม่ได้นอกจาก ปฏิพัท ชัยวิเทศ กับวิธีคิดในการทำงานศิลปะที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์ สำหรับเขา สิ่งที่สำคัญไม่น้อยไปกว่าเรื่องของความซับซ้อนของเทคนิคหรือวัสดุในงาน textile คือพื้นผิว (texture) ซึ่งทั้งสองคำนี้มีรากศัพท์เดียวกัน ทำให้ textile และ texture เป็นสิ่งที่ปรากฏร่วมกันเสมอ การสร้างพื้นผิวจึงเป็นดั่งปรัชญาในการทำงานศิลปะของเขา

สำหรับงานศิลปะของปฏิพัทธ์ใน Dear sir/madam พาเราย้อนกลับไปสู่จุดเริ่มต้นที่เรียบง่ายของวัสดุคือฝ้าย ที่พวกเราคุ้มเคยกันดีผ่านเครื่องแต่งกายที่เราสวมใส่ในชีวิตประจำวัน นอกเหนือจากการใช้งานในเชิงอุตสาหกรรมแล้ว ในประเทศไทย ฝ้าย ถูกใช้อย่างแพร่หลายในวัฒนธรรมความเชื่อทางภาคเหนือบ้านเกิดของศิลปิน ในพิธีกรรมสำคัญเช่น พิธีสืบชะตา พิธีบายศรีสู่ขวัญ พิธีอันแสดงอัตลักษณ์ทางวัฒนธรรม ซึ่งในอุตสาหกรรมท่องเที่ยว ความเป็นพื้นถิ่นที่ไม่สามารถจับต้องได้นี้ เป็นสิ่งถูกขายไปพร้อมกับผลิตภัณฑ์หัตถกรรมจากชาวบ้าน ในรูปแบบของที่ระลึกแก่ผู้มาเยือน ศิลปินพาเราย้อนไปยังขั้นตอนแรกก่อนที่สินค้าจะถูกดัดแปลงจนกลายเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ทางวัฒนธรรมให้เราได้เห็นเส้นใยและลายของการถูกถักทอจนออกมาเป็นผืนผ้า

ธิดารัตน์ จันทเชื้อ ศิลปินหญิงผู้เกิดและโตในกรุงเทพมหานคร ด้วยความที่สวมฮิญาบ ผู้คนจึง stereotype ว่าธิดารัตน์เป็นมุสลิมที่มาจากสามจังหวัดภาคใต้ ซึ่งเป็นพื้นที่อันมีเหตุการณ์ความรุนแรงต่อเนื่องมานับสิบปี เกิดเป็นอคติที่มีต่อคนในประเทศเดียวกันว่าชาวมุสลิมเป็นกลุ่มหัวรุนแรงและเกิดเป็นความหวาดกลัวต่อชาวมุสลิมในที่สุด สิ่งนี้ไม่เพียงเกิดแค่ในสเกลของพื้นที่ในประเทศเล็กๆ อย่างไทยเท่านั้น หากแต่เกิดขึ้นกับพื้นที่อื่นเช่นในปาเลสไตน์ เหตุการณ์ความขัดแย้งอันนำไปสู่ความรุนแรงในระดับ “สงคราม” ซึ่งได้มีเรื่องของศาสนาเข้ามาเกี่ยวข้องนั้น ส่งผลให้เกิดการเหมารวมชาวมุสลิมจากสายตาชาวโลกว่าเป็นกลุ่มคนที่อันตราย ซึ่งความจริงแล้ว ไม่ใช่ชาวมุสลิมทุกคนที่จะเห็นด้วยกับความรุนแรงนี้แต่ก็เลี่ยงไม่ได้เลยที่จะถูกตัดสินและยัดเยียดความ “เป็นอื่น” ให้ ซึ่งสิ่งนี้เองเป็นแรงบันดาลใจแก่ธิดารัตน์ได้สร้างสรรค์ผลงานชุด “ในนามของความสงบ” เพื่อสะท้อนมุมมองต่อเหตุการณ์ให้แก่ผู้ชมในฐานะชาวมุสลิมที่อาศัยอยู่ในประเทศไทย

คนไทยมีความผูกพันกับความเชื่อและเรื่องโชคลาง โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งเรื่องของตัวเลข เรามักจะเห็นแรงศรัทธาของคนไทยที่มีต่อสิ่งที่พวกเขาเชื่อว่าศักดิ์สิทธิ์ จากการเดินทางไปบูชากราบไหว้เพื่อขอโชคลาภ หรือที่คนไทยเรียกกันสั้นๆ ว่า “ขอหวย” ด้วยหวังว่า ผลล็อตเตอรี่ที่จะถูกประกาศ ทุกวันที่ 1 และ 16 จะทำให้พวกเขาได้เป็นเศรษฐีใหม่และมีคุณภาพชีวิตที่ดีขึ้น กิติก้อง ติลกวัฒนโนทัย ศิลปินไทยมากประสบการณ์ จึงได้หยิบเอาตัวเลขไทยมาเป็นองค์ประกอบหนึ่งของผลงาน Abstract ผ่านเทคนิค Acrylic and lacquer on canvas ซึ่งเป็นรูปแบบผลงานที่ประสบความสำเร็จมาแล้วจากการแสดงนิทรรศการที่ประเทศสิงคโปร์และฝรั่งเศส

Dear sir/madam จึงเป็นดั่งจดหมายอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ (E-mail) จากประเทศไทยส่งไปยังผู้ชมทั่วโลก เพื่อบอกเล่าเรื่องราวในแง่มุมต่างๆ ที่เกิดขึ้นในประเทศไทย แม้ว่าผู้ชมจากต่างประเทศจะยังไม่สามารถเดินทางมายังประเทศไทยได้ในขณะนี้ เอส เอ ซี แกลเลอรี ก็จะพาคุณท่องเที่ยวไทยในโลกเสมือน ผ่านผลงานของศิลปินไทยทั้ง 4 ท่าน ตั้งแต่วันที่ 4-18 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2565 ทาง Artsy
