The Boundary of Solitude: By Vacharanont Sinvaravatn

31 March - 28 June 2023

In a distant territory, nature is set and depicted as an element of a nation embedded with social and political ideologies that define the existence of things through the borders of modern states. The blurred reality of the imaginary line that divides this boundary has created a robust nation-state discourse through processes of appropriation, control, and definition that separate him from us through the differences in political ideologies. Borders become a physical arrangement of relations between people and states which is still left with the remnants of the area's image of nature describing its beauty. Therefore, filled with impetus without words, unveiling a rift on the border of history that still connects the identities and places of people today through memories and stories in the historical context of the Cold War era.

Sinvaravatn was born and raised within the context of urban society. Even though it is a city in Suphan Buri Province, it is viewed differently and far from the understanding of being a city as an economic center like the Bangkok Metropolitan Area. Memories of the scenery in rural Thailand with personal memories of the artist converge on the conflicts in mainstream Thai history, inviting doubt about the work of 'Landscape' as an instrument of state to invent a 'memory' and a process that is not just an image, also creating specific definitions at the same time. ‘Countryside Before Memory’ (works in this series, divided into two parts, were exhibited together in a group exhibition in 2021, with the first part being revealed in ‘The Place of Memories’ exhibition at SAC Gallery and the second part in ‘Future Tense: Imagining the Unknown Future Contemplating the Cold War Past’ at the Jim Thompson Art Center). A sense of rural imagery is questioned throughout the series. Why and how that makes the scenery a tool for the state to pass on ideology and controversy over the meaning of space, especially the extent of the distance and the nature that means combining the way of the countryside through the eyes of the central state, it became a question that Sinvaravatn still skeptical, keep asking questions and paying attention.

The Boundary of Solitude” exhibition revisits the landscape using landscape painting to understand the identity and place of Sinvaravatn at the crevice of memory, which is inconsistent with Thailand's contemporary political landscape. The artist confronts himself again through the landscape of a space that places itself on the borders far from the state's center—and mainstream history. Thus, Sinvaravatn's landscape paintings are reflections inseparable from contemporary historical contexts. It's not just about reading through the elements and their placement within the painting but the events and statements behind the image. The same is true for the sense of nation existence that transcends the physical embedded into the body of geography.

It is undeniable that the dynamics of politics in the Cold War era affected the policy of public utility development, and an economic development plan was formed, which plays an essential role in pioneering remote areas. At the same time, it is full of efforts by the state to transmit and propagate the ideology of the central state. With the struggle for political ideology, the scenery that used to be far away was visible. Familiar memory connects the past with which the self of the last generation exists in the present, and the complicated pinpoint of the history that is intertwined, piles up, hiding the past over the history embedded in the ideology of the state and the struggle for the memory in the distant boundary landscape.

In the first room, he placed himself in a mainstream historical site, leading Sinvaravatn to travel to remote areas and the border of the past tales, the red area around the Phu Phan Mountain Range. Landscape paintings that appear strange stand still and invite you to reflect on things surrounding them. It's not just the appearance of a natural landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see but also the history and the creation of nation-state boundaries through various operations. Stillness is embedded with ideological incompatibility. Concealed and hidden with words, it is equivalent to random throws, bushes, and landscapes that are never certain in memory. The image of lonely nature has become one of the tools of the state to realize the feeling and sense of the fictional nation of the community, where these relationships affect how we see ourselves in the present and relate to the past. Virtual images talk about memories and powers embedded in natural areas as a background inseparable from history.

Sinvaravatn transformed himself from curiosity towards the unlimited possibilities of unforeseen circumstances or from the event that causes the event not to appear. It is a complex relationship of self between space, place, movement, stillness, and landscape. In the second exhibition room, The artist confronts the conflict between history, memory, and natural space, leading into existence when he gazes at nature ahead. Accept and embrace the self that exists here and nowhere else. Distract himself from a landscape painting that seems to reflect the truth of the eyes to the fact that it is faithful to the image from memory, where experience, emotion, and imagination come together. Nature has become part of the experience, and the experience has become part of nature.

The landscape painting of Vacharanont Sinvaravatn in “The Boundary of Solitude” exhibition is a painting of natural scenery in the red area around the Phu Phan Mountain range. But it is an experience or consciousness towards the body of knowledge; conversely, it is a vessel of memories that co-creates the artist's identity. Come to reveal or persuade to examine events that are not recorded or told beyond mainstream history rather than being a visual representation of the natural beauty the eye sees.

Returning to nature, not the longing for the lost beauty of rural areas images or an ideal way of life and society, created as a false dream to people by pressing poverty and economic isolation beneath as it is a popular norm in the aftermath of the 1997 financial crisis. But now, returning means understanding the loneliness of one's identity in the face of natural scenery amid the shoulders of history, memories, tales, and images that tie his existence to the overlapping past in the natural space.

Therefore, the work of landscape paintings in this exhibition can be compared to a portrait that reflects the artist's identity. Who pays attention to the lost or has been lost? It's like a neglected wound. To identify the origin of an identity that cannot be alienated, unaware, and naively ignored by the silence which has become part of the recurring violence in the Thai political space. In a timeless atmosphere in a solitude landscape painting. Those areas are full of stories. This landscape may lay out the personal relationship between the individual and the history surrounding it. In the context of relations between alienated areas far beyond imagination, meanwhile, connected and familiar with the memory of the typical natural landscape.

Future Tense: Imagining the Unknown Future, Contemplating the Cold War Past
