I'll be back: by Preyawit Nilachulaka

Preyawit Nilachulaka is a contemporary artist whose practice has reached a new level of depth and intensity, both in terms of his technique and philosophy. Drawing from his personal experience and observation of contemporary society, Preyawit turns his attention to what is closest to him, identifying life itself as a subject-matter to be explored, filled with questions that are yet to be answered. Death in particular remains a mystery. Departing from a detailed study of unusual manners of death in today’s context, the artist looks inward as he contemplates his own passing, speculating on possible causes and circumstances. Art allows for death to be presented as an adventure, a dark comedy in which the audience plays a part, while bringing about a deeper exchange of views.

This imaginative body of works by Preyawit questions humans’ mode of existence and contemporary civilisation through zombie characters that know neither life or death, or rather find themselves situated at a half-point between these two states. Their immortality renders their existence meaningless, making them lifeless moving beings. In popular movies, their presence is often coupled with apocalyptic scenarii—the confluence of walking corpses and society’s collapse often leading to survival efforts that can feel like one has passed the point of no-return while being unable to reach one’s destination.

Focusing on the brief instant during which a particular zombie is able to choose the manner of their demise, this series pictures near-death situations that bring colour to zombies’ rather dull lives and illustrates our own existential questions and search for meaning. The brief instant during which zombies are able to bring their bodies to a death-adjacent state might be the only flash of life they can experience.

“I’ll be back“ presents Preyawit’s humorous outlook on death. Omnipresent in the exhibition, death is also colourful and movie-like, with viewers invited to join in on an escapade away from an empty life. The artist’s personal reflections on death and the multiple pathways that can lead towards an instantaneous demise prompts the audience to similarly ponder on their own existence. Although some of these questions may never be fully answered, such interrogations are what differentiates humans from the other beings they coexist with.

The exhibition “I'll be back” will be held on the third floor of Art Connection (BTS Ploenchit Exit 1), Rosewood Bangkok Hotel, Ploenchit road, Bangkok from 1 June until 31 August 2021.

ปรียวิศว์ นิลจุลกะ นับเป็นหนึ่งในศิลปินที่มีเส้นทางในวงการศิลปะร่วมสมัยจนได้ระยะของความเข้มข้นทางความคิดและทักษะ จากการใช้ชีวิตและเฝ้ามองสังคม ในวันนี้ ปรียวิศว์ได้กลับมาตั้งคำถามจากสิ่งใกล้ตัวและพบว่าชีวิตนั้นเป็นสิ่งที่น่าค้นหา และเต็มไปด้วยคำถามมากมายที่ยังรอการค้นพบ โดยเฉพาะความตายที่ยังเป็นพื้นที่ปริศนา จากการเฝ้าสังเกตสถานการณ์ของการเสียชีวิตที่ไม่ปกติในสังคมโลกปัจจุบัน ทำให้เขาได้กลับมาขบคิดถึงชีวิตของตัวเองทั้งวิธี และสถานการณ์ของการตายในแบบที่จิตรกรรมจะสามารถจัดวางสถานการณ์เหล่านี้ให้ผู้ชมได้ร่วมพจญภัยไปกับศิลปินอย่างสนุกสนานด้วยอารมณ์ขันร้ายๆ พร้อมกับการแลกเปลี่ยนทัศนคติที่มีต่อความตายไปพร้อมๆ กัน

ผลงานจิตรกรรมที่เต็มไปด้วยจินตนาการชุดล่าสุดของปรียวิศว์ตั้งคำถามกับการดำรงอยู่ของมนุษย์ในสังคมร่วมสมัยด้วยตัวละครซอมบี้ที่ไม่รู้จักความตายและแม้กระทั่งการมีชีวิตอยู่ ความเป็นอมตะของซอมบี้ได้ทำให้การมีชีวิตอยู่ไม่มีความหมาย เป็นเพียงสภาวะที่เคลื่อนไหวได้แต่ไม่ได้มีชีวิต หรืออาจจะกล่าวได้ว่าซอมบี้คือสภาวะที่ติดอยู่ตรงกลางระหว่างโลกของคนเป็นและโลกของคนตาย และในภาพยนตร์ส่วนใหญ่การเกิดขึ้นของซอมบี้มักจะมาพร้อมกับสถานการณ์ของโลกที่กำลังล่มสลาย ส่วนผสมระหว่างซากที่เดินได้และการล่มสลายทางสังคมยิ่งบีบคั้นให้เราเอาตัวรอดในลักษณะที่เรียกว่ากลับตัวไม่ได้และไปไม่ถึง

จิตรกรรมชุดนี้นำเสนอช่วงเวลาสั้นๆ ที่ซอมบี้ตนหนึ่งเลือกวิธีที่จะตาย สถานการณ์ต่างๆ ช่วยให้ชีวิตที่แสนน่าเบื่อของซอมบี้ในฐานะตัวแทนคำถามของการดำรงชีวิตที่ไม่มีเป้าหมายได้มีประสบการณ์เฉียดตายหรือการนำพาให้ร่างกายอยู่ในสภาพใกล้เคียงกับความตาย อาจจะเป็นเพียงช่วงเวลาเดียวที่ทำให้ซอมบี้ได้ตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของชีวิต การมีตัวตนอยู่ แม้เป็นเพียงเสี้ยวนาทีสั้นๆ ก็ตาม

กล่าวได้ว่า “I’ll be back“ เป็นนิทรรศการที่ปรียวิศว์เลือกนำเสนอมุมมองเกี่ยวกับความตายอย่างขบขัน การว่ายวนอยู่ในความตายที่เต็มไปด้วยสีสันราวกับอยู่ในสถานการณ์ของภาพยนตร์ ชักชวนผู้ชมร่วมผจญภัยกันไปในสถานการเฉียดตาย ติดตามและมีส่วนร่วมในสภาวะดังกล่าวพร้อมๆ กับความว่างเปล่าในชีวิต จากประสบการณ์ของศิลปินที่ครุ่นคิดถึงความตาย ตั้งคำถามกับการมีชีวิตอยู่ สู่การจินตนาการณ์ถึงรูปแบบที่หลากหลายของการเดินทางไปหาความตายเพียงชั่วขณะ กระตุ้นให้ผู้ชมได้ตั้งคำถามถึงการดำรงอยู่ ซึ่งสุดท้ายอาจจะเป็นคำถามที่เรายังไม่มีคำตอบ แต่อย่างน้อยความคับข้องสับสนนี้แสดงให้เห็นว่ามนุษย์แตกต่างกับสิ่งมีชีวิตอื่นๆ บนโลกใบนี้อย่างไร
