Floriography: by Praiya Ketkool

Sometimes flowers are compared to women or to non-verbal languages. This is because, flowers are often thought of as fragile, gentle, and emotional objects.

Throughout the history of art, artists have created pictures of flowers all of which are incredibly unique. And with the addition of each new artist, the perspectives and depictions of the flower varies and is ever changing.

Human makes use of their linguistic skills in transmitting information since homo sapiens. However, Ferdinand de Saussure pointed out the use of signs, symbols, and their interpretation. He broke down the relationship of signifier from the signified that allowed understanding and meaning to blossom marvelously from just looking at a 'picture' with flowers as the subject matter. It is interesting, that when we look at the image of a flower, we tend to have our own interpretations or versions of the definition of the flower. However, Praiya Ketkool interprets things from a simplified and  a more straight forward perspective.

Praiya sees the correlation of everything from the grass flower that is sprouting from a tiny corner that could relate to something as infinite as the universe. By shining the light onto the subject of life excluded from the margins, Praiya sees the grass flower as part of a well-balanced eco-system that is small but great in its meaning.

Roadside grass flowers will grow as long as it remains untouched. But with the increasing speed of the revolution of the sapiens, the world seems to have been left behind. Human being started to organize and put things in order and as a result organism were allowed to grow but was never allowed to truly live. Praiya picked up this narrative and projected it on her paintings, she portrays this 'picture' of a grass flower through the recreation of the eco-system upon the canvas with the use of line and colours.

Praiya expresses herself through the arrangment of colours that are juxtaposed by the small shapes that emphasises this aesthetic of the ordinary. And the luminating lines depicted all over the surface embraces the manifestations of life and their existence on this blue planet through a rather humbling and modest perspective.

The exhibition “Floriography” will be held on the third floor of Art Centre Bldg., SAC Gallery from 27 June until 26 July 2020. The official opening ceremony will be held on 27 June 2020, 1:00-7:00PM.

ใครสักคนเปรียบดอกไม้ให้กลายเป็นสื่อสัญลักษณ์ของผู้หญิง เปรียบดอกไม้ให้กลายเป็นภาษา เปรียบดอกไม้ให้กลายเป็นสิ่งที่บอบบาง อ่อนไหว และอ่อนโยน

ภาพของดอกไม้ถูกผลิตขึ้นซ้ำแล้วซ้ำเล่าในหน้าของประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะ โดยหลากหลายศิลปิน หากแต่การปรากฏขึ้นในแต่ละครั้งนั้นก็ไม่เคยหยุดซ้ำย่ำอยู่กับที่ เพราะผู้สร้างสรรค์ผลงานเหล่านั้นต่างก็ให้มุมมองและการรับรู้ใหม่ๆ ที่เกิดขึ้นอยู่ตลอดเวลา

การเล่นแร่แปรธาตุทางความหมายอยู่ในสำนึกของมนุษย์ตั้งแต่อดีต จนมาชัดเจนเมื่อโซซูร์อธิบายการตีความทางความหมายผ่านภาษาของมนุษย์ เมื่อนั้น signifier จึงแยกหลุดออกจาก signified และความหมายอื่นก็ทำงานอย่างบานสะพรั่ง น่าประหลาดใจที่เมื่อมองดูภาพวาดสักภาพที่มีดอกไม้เป็นส่วนประกอบ เรามักจะมองไปที่ความหมายอื่นๆ ที่ใจเรารังสรรค์ขึ้นมา แต่สิ่งที่ไปรยาทำนั้นกลับตรงกันข้าม เพราะมันกลับเป็นวิธีการตีความอย่างเรียบง่ายและตรงไปตรงมา นั่นก็คือ การดำรงอยู่ของระบบนิเวศน์ในตัวดอกไม้เอง

พื้นที่เล็กๆ ในสิ่งที่ ไปรยา เกตุกูล มองเห็นคือความสัมพันธ์ของชีวิตระหว่างกันและกัน มันคือภาพจำลองของอณูหนึ่งที่สะท้อนไปถึงอนันต์ในระดับจักรวาล มันคือแบบจำลองนิเวศน์อันสมดุลย์และยิ่งใหญ่ผ่านสายตาของศิลปินที่เอาใจใส่และสนใจในชายขอบของสิ่งมีชีวิตอื่นๆ

ในความธรรมดาตามธรรมชาติของพืชพันธุ์ริมทาง หากไม่มีสิ่งใดไปรุกราน มันก็จะงอกงามไปตามสภาพแวดล้อมที่มันเป็น แต่การอยู่ร่วมกันของธรรมชาติและสิ่งมีชีวิตอันแข็งแกร่งที่วิวัฒนาการมาในอัตราเร่งอันรวดเร็วอย่างเซเปียนส์ กลับทำให้เกิดการเข้าไปควบคุมและจัดการธรรมชาติให้เป็นระเบียบ แม้ยังคงไว้ซึ่งชีวิตแต่กลับไร้ชีวา และนี่เป็นสิ่งที่ไปรยาได้สร้างขึ้นมาในผลงานจิตรกรรมของตัวเอง มันคือการสร้างภาพแทนพืชพันธุ์ของเหล่าวัชพืชในแง่มุมอันอ่อนโยน ผ่านการใช้เส้นและสีจำนวนมหาศาลในการสร้างนิเวศน์อันมีคุณค่าและงดงามนี้ขึ้นมาอีกครั้งในรูปแบบเฉพาะของตัวเอง

ปลายทางจึงปรากฏเป็นกลุ่มแห่งสีสัน มวลของรูปทรงขนาดเล็ก และเส้นอันระยิบระยับไปทั้งภาพ ในการสร้างสุนทรียะแห่งความธรรมดาในมุมมองของศิลปิน อีกทางก็คือการบอกเล่าเรื่องราวของสิ่งที่มันเป็นคุณค่าแห่งการดำรงอยู่ของชีวิตอื่นๆ ที่มีสาระในการอยู่ร่วมกันบนดาวเคราะห์สีฟ้าที่แสนจะธรรมดานี้ ด้วยมุมมองอันแสนจะนอบน้อมถ่อมตน

นิทรรศการ “Floriography” จัดแสดงระหว่างวันที่ 27 มิถุนายน - 26 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2563 ณ ชั้น 3 อาคารหอศิลป์ (ตึกใหญ่) เอส เอ ซี แกลเลอรี (SAC Gallery) โดยมีพิธีเปิดนิทรรศการในวันที่ 27 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2563 ตั้งแต่เวลา 13:00-19:00 น.
