Out of the fold: by Kanchalee Ngamdamronk

In today’s rapidly changing and seemingly chaotic world, there are countless technologies and tools that help facilitate every aspect of our lives. Our existence and footprints are so greatly transmitted through the digital world that sometimes we may see technology as a principle of living. A famous proverb from the Native American Lakota tribe says “When a man moves away form nature, his heart becomes hard”. This saying holds relevance in today’s world where humans tremendously rely on technology until we forget that we are a product of nature, and to create with our hands is the nature of being human.

Kanchalee Ngamdamronk is an artist who has a background in textiles and a tremendous appreciation for the process of weaving. She views the act of using both hands and yarns as tools to create body of works as an abstract language in its own right. The design process of hand weaving is complex. It requires meticulous planning, calculations, repetition, time and patience. The orderly nature of weaving is a way of navigating and balancing out chaotic thoughts and emotions that constantly arise from living in a fast-paced and turbulent society while reconnecting with her own human nature. Although highly systematic, there are infinite possibilities in creating using this craft. In this regard, the artist has adopted the concept and process of weaving, both technically and abstractly, as the main inspiration of her textile works. 

“Out of the fold“ is an exhibition of textile art pieces created using techniques of stitching, folding, tie-dyeing and patchworking. Taking inspiration from simple geometric lines and shapes that arise from her weaving background and distinctive shibori work, the artist utilized traditional stitch-resist techniques to push the technical boundaries of traditional textiles and created a body of distinctively complex works which tear away from conventional tie-dye textiles. The abstract language conveyed through the patterns, natural colours, embroidered lines and threads that hold the shape of the fabrics and three-dimensional qualities of the works invites the viewers to observe both the results and the process while being mindful of the significance of work crafted by human hands and the human qualities in the modern world.

The exhibition “Out of the fold” will be held on the third floor of Art Connection (BTS Ploenchit Exit 1), Rosewood Bangkok Hotel, Ploenchit road, Bangkok from 7 January until 31 March 2020.

ในโลกที่เต็มไปด้วยการพัฒนาอย่างรวดเร็วและเต็มไปด้วยความวุ่นวาย ในปัจจุบันมีเทคโนโลยีมากมายที่อำนวยความสะดวกให้กับทุกบริบทของชีวิต การที่ตัวตนของเรานั้นถูกสื่อผ่านโลกดิจิทัลจนในบางครั้งอาจทำให้เรามองเทคโนโลยีเป็นสูตรสำเร็จของการใช้ชีวิต อินเดียนแดงเผ่าลาโคต้า (Lakota) มีสุภาษิตประจำเผ่าบทหนึ่งว่า “เมื่อใดก็ตามที่มนุษย์ห่างไกลจากธรรมชาติ มนุษย์นั้นจะกลายเป็นคนจิตใจที่หยาบกระด้าง” ซึ่งเป็นสุภาษิตที่สอดคล้องกับโลกยุคปัจจุบันที่คนพึ่งพาเทคโนโลยีจนกระทั่งลืมไปว่าเราคือมนุษย์ที่เป็นผลผลิตของธรรมชาติและการสร้างสรรค์ด้วยมือของเราคือธรรมชาติของความเป็นมนุษย์

กรรณชลี งามดำรงค์ คือศิลปินที่มีพื้นฐานในการทำงานสิ่งทอและมีความหลงใหลในกระบวนการนี้ เธอมองว่าการใช้สองมือและเส้นด้ายในการรังสรรค์ผลงานเปรียบเสมือนภาษาชนิดหนึ่ง ทั้งนี้กระบวนการออกแบบและการทอผ้าด้วยมือเป็นระบบที่ซับซ้อน ต้องใช้การคำนวณ วางแผน ทำซ้ำ และนอกจากนั้นยังใช้ความละเอียดและความอดทนอย่างมาก วิถีของการทอจึงเป็นเสมือนการจัดระเบียบและสร้างสมดุลให้กับความคิดอันยุ่งเหยิงที่มาจากการใช้ชีวิตในสังคมที่มีความรวดเร็วและวุ่นวาย และยังเป็นการเชื่อมโยงระหว่างธรรมชาติและความเป็นมนุษย์ของเธอเอง ในขณะเดียวกันการสร้างสรรค์ในระบบและวิถีที่กล่าวมาก็สร้างความเป็นไปได้อย่างไม่มีที่สิ้นสุด ศิลปินได้นำแนวคิดและวิถีของการทอผ้าทั้งในเชิงเทคนิคและการปฏิบัติมาเป็นแรงบันดาลใจในการทำงานศิลปะนามธรรม

นิทรรศการ “Out of the fold“ รวบรวมผลงานศิลปะจากผืนผ้าที่ใช้เทคนิคการเย็บ พับ มัด ย้อมและตัดต่อผ้า นำเสนอผลงานศิลปะร่วมสมัยที่ใช้รากฐานของการมัดย้อมดั้งเดิมและการย้อมสีธรรมชาติ ผสมผสานกับแรงบันดาลใจจากการทอ เส้นสายและรูปทรงเรขาคณิต มาผลักดันขอบเขตเชิงเทคนิคและสร้างงานที่มีมิติ ซับซ้อน และฉีกออกจากรูปแบบผ้ามัดย้อมที่คนคุ้นเคยทั่วไป ภาษาที่ถูกสื่อออกมาผ่านลวดลายของผ้า สีสันที่ถูกสกัดจากธรรมชาติ เส้นด้ายที่ใช้ในการเย็บและปัก รวมถึงรูปแบบสามมิติที่เกิดจากการใช้เทคนิคมือเหล่านี้ เชื้อเชิญให้ผู้ชมได้เห็นทั้งผลลัพธ์และกระบวนการระหว่างทางในการสร้างสรรค์งานในบริบทของศิลปะนามธรรมอันเชื่อมโยงกับคุณค่าของงานฝีมือที่เต็มไปด้วยจิตวิญญาณของความเป็นมนุษย์
