Emergent Antumbra

“Emergent antumbra“ an exhibition as the outcome of Catherine Paleczny’s residency with SAC Residency Program, after three months period working with Jirawong Wongtra-ngan, the founder of IN CLAY STUDIO POTTERY.

Jirawong Wongtra-ngan and Catherine Paleczny are both interested in weaving architectural and biological texture narratives through their ceramic works. They both agree that we are so busy living life that it blinds us from seeing how much nature bond to human being. Paleczny’s ceramic works perform ‘Emergent’ one of the most spectacular natural consequences when imitating organic textures and systems. Paleczny approaches the exhibiting spaces referencing geographical landscape of Ping River, the main river that runs through Chiang Mai, installing with her ceramic pieces.

Paleczny extracts her concern of nature and environment from observing the landscape of Chiang Mai city. She takes the opportunity to stir up environmental situation that we may have seen them but too busy to notice.

Wongtra-ngan draws his interest to ‘Antumbra’ around human habitats. He sees light and shadow occur differently through the day from the super-systematic product like wavy roof tiles. He inlays his roof tiles with free form different colours of clay to recreate light-shadow phenomena and plays around with the idea of unpredictable natural movement on such systematic man-made products.

Both Paleczny and Wongtra-ngan’s works consist of light and shadow. Light touches white stone ware ceramics and creates shadow cast on the opposite direction. Strange looking shadow shapes either on the works or the wall initiate conversation between exhibition spaces and both of their works.

The exhibition “Emergent antumbra” will be held from 9 August until 20 September 2019. The official opening ceremony will be held on 9 August 2019, 6:00PM onwards. SAC Art Lab allocated at De Naga Hotel 21 Soi 2 Rashmakla Moolmuang Road Tambon Phrasingh Muang Chiang Mai, 50200.

นิทรรศการ “Emergent antumbra“ ถือเป็นอีกหนึ่งนิทรรศการสรุปจากโครงการศิลปินในพำนักภายใต้การดูแลของ SAC Residency Program ซึ่งบริหารงานโดย เอส เอ ซี แกลเลอรี โดย Catherine Paleczny ศิลปินเซรามิกจากแคนาดา ร่วมกับ จิรวงษ์ วงษ์ตระหง่าน นักเซรามิกหน้าใหม่ผู้ก่อตั้ง In Clay Studio Pottery จ. เชียงใหม่

ผลงานประติมากรรมเซรามิกที่ศิลปินทั้งสองใช้บอกเล่าเรื่องราวความสนใจในอารยธรรมสิ่งปลูกสร้างและร่องรอยพื้นผิวของสิ่งมีชีวิต เมื่อความวุ่นวายประจำวันบดบังความหมายของธรรมชาติที่มีต่อมนุษย์ออกไป ผลงานของ Catherine กล่าวถึงระบบความเคลื่อนไหวในลักษณะเป็นกลุ่ม พื้นผิวที่ลอกเลียนแบบจากธรรมชาติ ไปจนถึงการสร้างรูปทรงที่ทำให้ผู้ชมหวนนึกถึงสิ่งมีชีวิตที่อาจจะเคยหรือไม่เคยพบเจอมาก่อน นอกเหนือไปจากนี้ Catherine ยังสนใจการจัดวางด้วยระบบธรรมชาติ (organic) ที่อ้างอิงกับสถาปัตยกรรมและสภาพทางภูมิศาสตร์ของพื้นที่ต่างๆ อย่าง แม่น้ำปิง หรือทิวเขาที่เรียงรายทอดตัวด้วยวิถีของธรณี

การสังเกตนี้มีผลให้ประติมากรรมของ Catherine โดดเด่นทั้งในการสื่อสารเรื่องราวของธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม ในขณะเดียวกันก็ยังไม่เพิกเฉยต่อปัญหาปัจจุบัน โดยเฉพาะความเปลี่ยนแปลงโดยมนุษย์ที่ปรากฏให้พบเห็นจนชินตา

ในขณะที่ จิรวงษ์ สนใจระบบลูกคลื่นแบบกระเบื้องบนหลังคาที่พักอาศัย แม้จะเป็นของธรรมดาที่พบเห็นทั่วไป แต่จิรวงษ์จินตนาการถึงความไม่เป็นระบบระเบียบของแสง–เงาที่ทอดเปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามช่วงเวลาและฤดูกาล เขาได้แทนแสงเงาขึ้นใหม่ด้วยการเลือกดินต่างสีกันบนชิ้นงาน นำเสนอความเคลื่อนไหวแบบธรรมชาติบนความเป็นระบบแบบแผนของรูปทรงแผ่นหลังคา

ศิลปินทั้งสองมองเห็นสัจธรรมที่มาพร้อมกับแสงบนวัตถุ หลักการธรรมชาติของเงาที่เคลื่อนพาดทับกับวัตถุรองรับในทิศทางตรงกันข้ามกับแหล่งกำเนิดแสง ไม่เพียงแต่ทำให้เกิดพื้นที่ใหม่ทับซ้อนบนพื้นที่เดิม แต่นี่คือการสร้างบทสนทนาใหม่ผ่านรูปทรงที่ทำงานร่วมกับสถาปัตยกรรมที่โอบล้อมผลงานของทั้งสองเอาไว้
