Many people may give the first impression of artist Preyawit Nilachulaka as a popular singer who used to be a member in the band Girl before he created his own band Instinct. With Instinct, he is famous for an original soundtrack “Please send someone to love me” for the movie “Bangkok Traffic Love Story”.
A few people knew he was interested in art as a kid, and he made the decision to study painting in the faculty of fine arts from Srinakharinwirot University. Since graduating, he has been working on his art career. For this latest exhibition “Siam Rangers”, Preyawit is talking about some issues from his own experience and the social media which relate to the “police”,that have a tight connection with the Thai masses.
“The record company has a policy for artists as a responsibility for doing the social media, so I understand what’s going on with the different issues about society, especially the police topic is always the society’s favorite, because police is the career which is close to the people’s life, everyone always has some experience with police. It does not matter is it good or bad, directly or through the different media, I also have many experience with police before. So I select this one as topic of my art.”
The artist uses his experience and perspectives as a Thai person related to the police through these 20 paintings and 1 life-size sculpture in this exhibition. The models in his paintings are similar to authority figures and heroes, which also look like characters from children’s’ films. The viewers will be the ones who choose their perspectives.
Preyawit believes the art has a good intention and does not target any group, but just a humorous way to use art as an expression to the society and experience he had.
The exhibition “Siam Rangers” will be held on the second floor of Art Centre Bldg., SAC Gallery from 10 August until 10 September2017. The official opening ceremony will be held on 10 August 2017, 6:00PM onwards.
