Face Mask

Face Mask is the premiere exhibition of Naomi Maury and Damien Fragnon in Thailand, it is the result of the first two months of residence with SAC Art Lab and Residency program in Chiang Mai. Whether it is in Fragnon’s “naturally modified” installations or in Maury’s sculptural families, both are concerned about the pace at which our planet is changing. Their practice adresses societal sudden changes, especially climate changes and the growing risk it represents not only for us but for the whole eco system. They offer a commentary, and maybe the beginning of a solution, via their artistic research and their physical realisations.

The audience is invited to gain a privileged insight in the artist’s work, slowly being immersed in their world: two different practices that yet have numerous encounters with each other.

Maury and Fragnons’s works will be joined by two artists based in Chiang Mai, Woraporn Pongsamart and Surajate Tongchua. Pongsamart will show her installation “From time to time”, which can be understood as time capsules that represent our emotional as well as our bodi ly timelines. Tongchua’s will present his latest installation in Face Mask which can easily bring to mind tree leafs that have fallen off due to seasonal change. Yet those are in fact another man made product, which can in turn remind the audience the contemporary issues in waste disposal.

Those four positions come together for the group show Face Mask, an evocative title that directly adresses the all times high levels of air pollution in Chiang Mai.

Face Mask เป็นนิทรรศการรอบปฐมทัศน์ของ Naomi Maury และ Damien Fragnon ในประเทศไทย นิทรรศการนี้คือผลพวงจากการเข้าพำนักสองเดือนแรกกับ SAC Residency Program ในจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นผลงานจัดวางผ่านแนวคิด “ธรรมชาติดัดแปลง” ของ Fragnon หรือกลุ่มประติมากรรมสัมพันธ์ของ Maury ทั้งคู่ต่างก็กังวลเกี่ยวกับความเร็วที่โลกของเรากำลังเปลี่ยนแปลงไป การปฏิบัติงานของพวกเขาอยู่บนพื้นฐานของเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างฉับพลันของสังคม โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งการเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพภูมิอากาศและความเสี่ยงที่กำลังเพิ่มขึ้นทุกขณะ ซึ่งไม่เพียงสะท้อนผ่านตัวเราเท่านั้น แต่ทั้งกระบวนการของระบบนิเวศ พวกเขาเสนอความเห็นและอาจเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการแก้ปัญหาผ่านการวิจัยเชิงศิลปะและการรับรู้ทางกายภาพของพวกเขา

ผลงานของ Maury และ Fragnons จะจัดแสดงร่วมกับอีกสองศิลปินไทยรุ่นใหม่ที่พำนักอยู่ในเชียงใหม่ คือ วรพร พงษ์สามารถ และสุรเจต ทองเจือ โดย วรพรจะร่วมนำเสนอผลงานจัดวาง “From time to time” ซึ่งเป็นการสร้างความเข้าใจผ่านแคปซูลเวลาที่แสดงถึงเส้นทางของร่างกายและความรู้สึก พร้อมกับสุรเจตที่จะนำเสนอผลงานจัดวางล่าสุดของเขาในนิทรรศการ Face Mask ด้วยใบไม้ที่ร่วงหล่นคล้ายจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงตามฤดูกาล แต่ในความเป็นจริงแล้วผลงานของเขาคือสิ่งซึ่งสามารถเตือนผู้ชมถึงปัญหาร่วมสมัยในการกำจัดขยะ

ทั้งสี่ศิลปินมารวมตัวกันเพื่อนิทรรศการกลุ่ม Face Mask ซึ่งเป็นชื่อที่แสดงหมุดหมายของสถานการณ์มลพิษทางอากาศที่ยังอยู่ระดับสูงตลอดเวลาในเมืองเชียงใหม่
