Devils and Deities : by Vipoo Srivilasa

The belief systems in Thailand are complex and simple at the same time. In one way, they are hybrids of Buddhism, Hinduism, Bhramanism, Paganism, Shamanism and everything in between. Yet on the other hand, they are also simple: many Thais practice their beliefs as and when it is convenient to them, or in an emergency. When people cannot rely on the laws and authorities or the establishment, they turn to spiritual supports. When nothing else can help them, people grasp onto to nearest thing they can reach: a common sight in Thailand would see people worshipping a tree or taking a geyser for holy water. 

 
Devils and Deities is an exhibition with ceramics figurines of various sizes and shapes, like a ritualistic gathering of creatures that invites the audience a seat at their sacred hall. Inspired by the private collection of Buddhist images by collector Subhashok Angsuvarnsiri, the artist had created little devils standing proud and tall on wooden pedestals as though they were some kind of holy beings you may find at a temple. Divinity (2016) is a golden figure reminiscence of figures you would often see in places of worship. Often time, we believe in something in front of us because of the stories people tell; tales that were shared and passed on from neighbour to neighbour. Surely if it is gold and on a pedestal, it must be important and commands respect and worship? 

Sometimes what we think is good for us may not necessarily be something that contribute to our benefits. What “feels right” at the time may end up hurting us in the long run. We invite you to decide for yourself in this exhibition, which ones are the devils and which ones are the deities. The power is in your hand.

The exhibition “Devils and Deities” will be held on the third floor of Art Connection (BTS Ploenchit Exit 1), Rosewood Bangkok Hotel, Ploenchit road, Bangkok from 6 November 2019 until 4 January 2020.

ระบบความเชื่อในประเทศไทยนั้นมีความซับซ้อนแต่ก็ง่ายดายในเวลาเดียวกัน ในแง่หนึ่ง ระบบความเชื่อในประเทศไทยนั้นคือการแตกแขนงออกจาก พุทธ ฮินดู พราห์ม และความเชื่ออื่นๆ เช่น การนับถือผี หรือดินฟ้าอากาศ ในอีกด้านหนึ่ง ระบบความเชื่อในประเทศไทยนั้นก็มีความง่ายดายอยู่ นั่นคือการที่คนไทยส่วนใหญ่นั้นมักจะปฏิบัติตามความเชื่อนั้นก็ต่อเมื่อเป็นเวลาที่สะดวกต่อตนเอง หรือในยามขับขัน เมื่อถึงเวลาที่เราไม่สามารถจะพึ่งพากฎหมายหรือผู้มีอำนาจให้ช่วยเหลือเราได้แล้ว เราหลายคนจึงหาที่พึ่งทางจิตใจแทน และเมื่อเราสิ้นหวังจนไม่สามารถหาที่พึ่งอื่นใดได้แล้ว เราจึงยินดีคว้าสิ่งที่ใกล้ตัวที่สุด จนบางครั้ง ภาพการที่เรานับถือต้นไม้หรือน้ำผุดว่าเป็นสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์จึงเป็นภาพที่คุ้นตากันดีในสังคมไทย

 

นิทรรศการ Devils and Deities รวบรวมหุ่นเซรามิคน้อยใหญ่ หลากหลายรูปลักษณ์ เปรียบเสมือนการรวมตัวกันของสรรพสัตว์เพื่อประกอบพิธีกรรมอะไรบางอย่าง โดยเชื้อเชิญให้ผู้ดูได้เข้าร่วมเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของห้องโถงอันศักดิ์สิทธิ์นี้ ศิลปินได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากคอลเลคชั่นพระโบราณ ซึ่งเป็นผลงานสะสมของคุณ ศุภโชค อังคสุวรรณศิริ จึงเกิดเป็น Little Devils ปีศาจน้อยยืนอย่างสง่าผ่าเผยอยู่บนฐานโบราณ เปรียบดั่งรูปปั้นอันศักดิ์สิทธิ์ในวัด หรือในผลงานชุด Divinity (2016) จะเห็นได้ถึงเนื้อผิวที่เป็นสีทองประกายดั่งรูปปั้นที่เห็นได้บ่อยครั้งในสถานที่ประกอบพิธีทางศาสนาเพื่อบูชาหรือสักการะ ในหลายๆ ครั้ง เรามักจะเชื่อในสิ่งที่อยู่ตรงหน้าเราเพียงเพราะมีผู้อื่นเล่ามาปากต่อปาก ถ้าสิ่งนั้นถูกเคลือบด้วยทอง และถูกบูชาอยู่บนฐาน สิ่งนั้นต้องสำคัญและน่าเคารพบูชามิใช่หรือ?

 

บางครั้งสิ่งที่เราคิดว่าดีสำหรับตัวเราเอง อาจจะไม่ได้ส่งเสริมความดีให้เราดังที่คาดหวังไว้ สิ่งที่ทำให้รู้สึก “ใช่” ในขณะหนึ่ง อาจจะสามารถย้อนกลับมาทำร้ายเราได้ในไม่ช้าเช่นกัน เราขอเชิญชวนให้คุณได้เข้ามาค้นหาในนิทรรศการนี้ด้วยตัวคุณเอง ว่าสิ่งใดคือเทพและสิ่งใดคือปีศาจจำแลง อำนาจที่แท้จริงอยู่ในมือของคุณเอง
