“wrap” is a group exhibition by six illustrators who wish to portray the development of an illustration, one of the art forms which has currently been widely accepted. Many illustrators have invented methods and attractive characters to express their perspectives. Through the use of unique languages and a wide variety of characters, illustrations are not only used for a commercial purpose but also for reflecting ideas and contemporariness.

In essence, an illustration is a social observation and an expression of understanding with an attitude. Detailing is an illustration’s beauty, making it unique and able to relate with many other fields. In addition to beauty, an illustration is also a method of studying and understanding various aspects of the world—ranging from global politics, living things, to the relationship of young people. In this era, the existence of illustrators emphasizes the existence of subcultures, creating different tastes and diversity in the arts community.

In addition to creating attractive characters, “wrap” also desires to open up the conceptual space of art. The analysis of textures, planes, and internal forms aims to achieve the interaction between objects and space as well as the portrayal of concealing, wrapping, and covering concepts. This is not to obscure or hide, but to discover the physical “texture” and what lies beneath its shape or planes. Each artist uses his/her “method” to show interest and to independently connect what is inside and outside.

In the competition to present an incredible character, many characters have been invented in the world of illustration. Pomme Chan gives the meaning of home—a living space that encapsulates relationships and life—by showing the activities inside the house. TUNA Dunn shows stories of daily life, relationships, and love that are simple but special and delicate. Brightside expresses the chaos of societies and politics through the characters. The “collage” by Sethapong Povatong is created as a result of research and the collection of old illustrations which are then put together into a new story filled with history and contemporary events. Phannapast Taychamaythakool shows the integration of Eastern and Western paintings that are full of the charm of coloured lines together with diverse characters and 2CHOEY recreates well-known characters from our childhood memory by redesigning new faces into a unique sign language.

Therefore, “wrap” is an exhibition that is keen to explore the fundamental anatomy of spaces and objects, consisting of visible and tangible shapes and textures as well as different types of characters. No matter where these visual languages appear—on visible objects or planes—all the relationships in this world will be interpreted by the artists. At the right time, the characters will be alive and become a part of our lives.

The exhibition “wrap” will be held on the first floor of Art Centre Bldg., SAC Gallery from 13 January until 2 April 2022. The official opening ceremony will be held on 13 January 2022, 6:00PM onwards.

“wrap” นิทรรศการกลุ่มโดยศิลปินนักวาดภาพประกอบ (illustrator) ทั้งหกท่าน เพื่อสื่อสารถึงความเคลื่อนไหวของงานภาพประกอบในปัจจุบัน ที่ได้รับการยอมรับอย่างกว้างขวางในฐานะศิลปะแขนงหนึ่ง นักวาดภาพประกอบมากมายได้คิดค้นวิธีและตัวละครที่น่าดึงดูดมาใช้สื่อสารความคิด ผลงานเหล่านี้จึงไม่ใช่เพียงถูกใช้ในเชิงพาณิชย์เท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นผลงานศิลปะที่มีลักษณะเฉพาะในการสะท้อนความคิด ความรู้สึกร่วมสมัยด้วยภาษาอันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ผ่านตัวละครในหลากหลายคาแรคเตอร์

โดยเนื้อแท้ ภาพประกอบคือการสังเกตสังคม และถ่ายทอดความเข้าใจด้วยทัศนคติ มีความงามของการให้รายละเอียดเป็นเอกลักษณ์ที่สามารถเชื่อมโยงกับศาสตร์ต่างๆ ได้อย่างเป็นอิสระ นอกเหนือไปจากความงาม ในอีกมุมหนึ่งยังเป็นวิธีการศึกษาและทำความเข้าใจสิ่งต่างๆ บนโลกนี้ ตั้งแต่เรื่องการเมืองระดับโลก สิ่งมีชีวิตในธรรมชาติ ไปจนถึงความรัก ความสัมพันธ์ของหนุ่มสาวในยุคสมัย การมีอยู่ของนักวาดภาพประกอบเหล่านี้ ย้ำถึงการมีตัวตนอยู่ของวัฒนธรรมย่อย (subculture) สร้างรสนิยมที่แตกต่างหลากหลายให้กับระบบนิเวศของแวดวงศิลปะ

นอกจากการสร้างสรรค์ตัวละครอันเป็นเสน่ห์ของศิลปินแล้ว นิทรรศการ “wrap” ยังต้องการเปิดพื้นที่ทางความคิดของศิลปะภาพประกอบ ด้วยการวิเคราะห์พื้นผิว ระนาบ และรูปทรงภายในให้เกิดปฏิกิริยาของการจับคู่กับพื้นที่ และชั้นเชิงของการปกปิด ห่อหุ้ม ปกคลุม แต่ไม่ได้เป็นไปเพื่อการบดบัง หรือหลบซ่อน เพื่อค้นหากายภาพของ “พื้นผิว” และสิ่งที่อยู่ภายใต้รูปทรงหรือระนาบนั้นๆ ศิลปินแต่ละคนใช้ “วิธี” ที่ตนเองถนัด บอกเล่าสิ่งที่อยู่ในความสนใจของศิลปินและเชื่อมโยงสิ่งที่อยู่ภายนอกและภายในอย่างอิสระ 

ท่ามกลางการช่วงชิงพื้นที่นำเสนอตัวละครมหัศจรรย์ มีคาแรคเตอร์มากมายที่ถูกคิดค้นขึ้นในโลกของการวาดภาพประกอบ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นผลงานของ Pomme Chan ที่ให้ความหมายของบ้าน พื้นที่อยู่อาศัยซึ่งห่อหุ้มสายสัมพันธ์และชีวิต กลายเป็นกิจกรรมต่างๆ ภายในบ้าน TUNA Dunn กับเรื่องราวในชีวิตประจำวัน ความสัมพันธ์ ความรักที่แสนธรรมดาทว่าพิเศษละเมียดละไม รวมถึงความอลหม่านของตัวละครในผลงานของ Brightside เพื่อจำลองพื้นที่สังคม และการเมืองในผลงานของเขา ผลงานตัดแปะ (collage) ของ เศรษฐพงศ์ โพวาทอง ที่เกิดจากการค้นคว้า สะสมภาพประกอบเก่าเก็บ และนำมาร้อยเรียงเรื่องราวใหม่ บอกเล่าประวัติศาสตร์และเหตุการณ์ร่วมสมัย ผลงานของ ปัณพัท เตชเมธากุล ที่เต็มไปด้วยบรรยากาศของการผสมผสานระหว่างภาพวาดแบบตะวันออกและตะวันตกที่เต็มไปด้วยเสน่ห์ของเส้นสี ลวดลายที่ผูกล้อไปกับตัวละครหลากชนิด พร้อมกับผลงานของ 2CHOEY ที่สร้างสีสันด้วยตัวละครในวัยเด็กที่เราต่างรู้จักกันเป็นอย่างดี ด้วยใบหน้าที่ถูกออกแบบใหม่ให้กลายเป็นภาษามืออันเป็นเอกลักษณ์

“wrap” จึงเป็นนิทรรศการที่ต้องการสำรวจกายวิภาคพื้นฐานของพื้นที่และสรรพสิ่ง ประกอบด้วยมวลรูปทรง และพื้นผิวที่เราล้วนมองเห็นและจับต้องได้ ผ่านตัวละครรูปแบบต่างๆ ไม่ว่าภาษาภาพเหล่านี้จะปรากฏอยู่ที่ใหน บนวัตถุที่มองเห็น หรือจะอยู่บนระนาบใด ความสัมพันธ์ของเรื่องเล่าบนโลกนี้จะได้รับการตีความจากศิลปิน เพียงแต่เมื่อถึงเวลาที่เหมาะสม ตัวละครจะออกมาโลดแล่น และเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในชีวิตของเรา  Now … That’s a wrap!

นิทรรศการ “wrap” จัดแสดงระหว่างวันที่ 13 มกราคม - 2 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2565 ณ ชั้น 1 อาคารหอศิลป์ (ตึกใหญ่) เอส เอ ซี แกลเลอรี (SAC Gallery) โดยมีพิธีเปิดนิทรรศการในวันที่ 13 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2565 ตั้งแต่เวลา 18:00 น. เป็นต้นไป
