วิฬาร์ วิลิศมาหรา Eleganza Extravaganza Cats

For his third solo exhibition at SAC Gallery, Vipoo Srivilasa continues to explore Thai folk tales and literature through queer lens. Drawing inspiration from a play titled, Tao Chaiyachet, which was first shown to the public during the reign of Rama II (1809-24) Srivilasa picks out a character named Nang Maew, a cat that helps the protagonist throughout the story. Although Nang Maew is always portrayed as being over the top and often full of mannerisms, the original play was written at the time when all-male cast was common, therefore the character was portrayed exclusively by men. In retrospect, Srivilasa realises that the first time he watched the play as a young boy was his first memory of a man in drag. 

Eleganza Extravaganza Cats is an exhibition that celebrates queer visibility, and to critically look at how queer elements were included in classic Thai literature, with or without the author's intent. At the time when queerness as a concept did not exist, authors may have unknowingly used elements that may be perceived as queer in today's context, to create drama, mystery and dynamic in an otherwise conservative environment. In reflection to this, Srivilasa created a series of work that provides a new way to look at his creations - by amplifying the flamboyance of his sculptures, demanding attention to their presence in the room. 

The main body of the exhibition is a clowder of cat sculptures that have gold features that reflect light like jewels, contrasting to their bodies in black and white. Their facial expressions look back at the viewer as though they are extending an invitation to glance more at their bodies and their ornaments. At the opposite side of the exhibition, Srivilasa presents, for the first time, an immersive sound piece, in collaboration with Sirasar Boonma, a sound artist whose sound installation adds a new dimension to engage with Srivilasa's works. In the theme of self-discovery, the sound guides you through various layers that reflect the complexity of the queer identity.  

To be visible outside of the queer community is an important way for others who feel estranged from society to discover their own tribe, and to feel less isolated. While this topic is an ongoing dialogue to create a society where queer people can feel safe, welcomed and embraced; the exhibition also seeks to push the boundary and the conversation further by posing questions such as: whether or not queer people should feel the need to be accepted by those outside of the community; and whether or not by seeking those validations, the queer community is conforming to the hetero-normative structure that pushed them to the peripheral in the first place? 

In true Vipoo Srivilasa's ways, his sculptures offer both fun and accessibility on the outlook, and at the same time opens new dialogue for deeper and more meaningful interactions through his art to the society and those around us.

นิทรรศการเดี่ยวครั้งที่ 3 ที่ SAC Gallery (เอส เอ ซี แกลเลอรี) วิภู ศรีวิลาศ ยังคงสำรวจนิทานพื้นบ้านไทยและวรรณคดีไทยผ่านสายตาของเควียร์ (Queer)* โดยซึมซับแรงบันดาลใจจากบทละครนอกเรื่อง “ไชยเชษฐ์” ซึ่งแสดงต่อสาธารณชนเป็นครั้งแรกในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 2 (พ.ศ. 2352-2367) 

วิภูหยิบยกตัวละคร “นางวิฬาร์” แมวข้ารับใช้ที่ช่วยตัวเอกตลอดเรื่อง มามีบทบาทในงานศิลปะของเขา แม้ว่านางวิฬาร์มักถูกพรรณนาว่าช่างโอ้อวดและเต็มไปด้วยจริตจะก้าน เรื่องไชยเชษฐ์ถูกเขียนขึ้นในช่วงเวลาที่ละครนอกแสดงโดยผู้ชาย ด้วยเหตุนี้ ตัวละคร “นางวิฬาร์” จึงถูกถ่ายทอดผ่านฝีมือของนักแสดงชายเท่านั้นในยุคสมัยหนึ่ง เมื่อนึกย้อนกลับไปวิภูจึงได้ตระหนักว่า ครั้งแรก
ที่เขาได้ชมละครนอกเรื่องนี้ในฐานะเด็กชาย นั่นคือความทรงจำแรกของเขาเกี่ยวกับ DRAG (Dressed as a girl)

“วิฬาร์ วิลิศมาหรา Eleganza Extravaganza Cats” เป็นนิทรรศการที่ยกย่องการมีอยู่ของอัตลักษณ์เควียร์ และพินิจพิเคราะห์ถึงการมีอยู่ขององค์ประกอบเควียร์ในวรรณกรรมไทยโบราณ ไม่ว่าโดยเจตนาหรือไม่ของผู้แต่ง ในช่วงเวลาที่แนวคิดเรื่องความเป็นเพศไร้กรอบ (Queerness) ยังไม่ถูกคำนึงถึง ผู้เขียนอาจสร้างองค์ประกอบที่อนุมานได้ว่าเป็นเควียร์ในบริบทปัจจุบันอย่างไม่รู้ตัว เกิดเป็นความเร้าใจ ความลึกลับ และความมีชีวิตชีวาในแวดล้อมอนุรักษ์นิยม 

เพื่อสะท้อนแนวคิดนี้ วิภูจึงรังสรรค์ผลงานชุดที่นำเสนอวิธีการมองงานศิลปะของเขาใหม่ ด้วยการเพิ่มความวิลิศมาหราให้เหล่าประติมากรรม ซึ่งเรียกร้องความสนใจด้วยการปรากฏตัวของฝูงแมวกลางห้องนิทรรศการ ใจกลางของนิทรรศการนี้ประกอบด้วยฝูงแมวเซรามิกซึ่งมีสีทองประดับประดาทั่วตัว สะท้อนประกายแสงระยิบระยับราวกับอัญมณี ตัดกับสีดำและสีขาวของลำตัว สายตาของแมวบนแท่นจัดแสดงนั้นจ้องกลับไปยังผู้ชมราวกับว่ากำลังเชื้อเชิญให้ทอด

อีกด้านหนึ่งของห้องนิทรรศการ นับเป็นครั้งแรกที่วิภูเลือกจัดแสดงผลงานเสียงแบบ Immersiveโดยร่วมงานกับ ศิรษา บุญมา นักออกแบบเสียง ที่ศิลปะการจัดวางเสียงของเธอนั้นยิ่งเติมมิติใหม่ให้ผู้ชมได้ดำดิ่ง เกิดความรู้สึก ประสบการณ์ร่วมกับงานศิลปะของศิลปิน เพื่อที่จะสื่อสารเรื่อง “การค้นพบตัวเอง” วิภูใช้ “เสียง” นำพาคุณเดินทางสำรวจการเดินทางนั้นของเขา ผ่านมิติอันหลากหลาย ซึ่งก็สะท้อนความสลับซับซ้อนแห่งอัตลักษณ์เควียร์ 

“การได้มีอยู่” ของตัวตนเควียร์ในแพลตฟอร์มสื่อสังคม นอกเหนือคอมมูนิตี้ อาจทำให้คนที่กำลังรู้สึกแปลกแยกจากสังคมได้มองเห็นแห่งที่ของตนและรู้สึกโดดเดี่ยวน้อยลง แม้ว่าประเด็นนี้จะยังคงเป็นหัวข้อสนทนาที่ดำเนินไปอย่างไม่รู้จุดจบสิ้น แต่เพื่อสร้างสังคมที่เปิดกว้าง ยอมรับ และโอบรับผู้มีความหลากหลายทางเพศ นิทรรศการนี้จึงมุ่งจะขยายขอบเขตและกระตุ้นบทสนทนาให้กว้างทว่าลึกขึ้น ด้วยการแตกประเด็น เช่นการถูกยอมรับเป็นสิ่งจำเป็นสำหรับเควียร์ไหม? หรือการแสวงหาเรียกร้องการยอมรับเหล่านั้น เท่ากับสุดท้ายแล้วเราต้องก้มหัวให้กับกรอบโครงสร้าง Heteronormativity** ที่ผลักพวกเขาไปสู่ขอบสังคมตั้งแต่แรกหรือเปล่า?

ด้วยงานศิลปะลายเซ็นของ วิภู ศรีวิลาศ ประติมากรรมของเขาจึงให้ทั้งความสนุกสนานและการเข้าถึงมุมมองความคิด ขณะเดียวกันก็เปิดบทสนทนาใหม่ๆ ผ่านงานศิลปะเหล่านั้น เพื่อการสื่อสารที่ลึกซึ้งและมีความหมายมากขึ้นต่อสังคมและผู้คนรอบๆ ตัวเรา
