three is a magic number 15: Hypersweet: by three

three is a group of young blood artists from Japan, best known for their railleries toward Japanese pop culture representing in the form of sculptures. It is undeniable that Japanese anime and manga has become popular not only in Japan but worldwide. The group ‘three’ picked up the concept and started combining thousands of tiny anime figures to a larger figure sculpture. The figures were also cut into the size of digital screen, tablet or even smart phone, for instance, to highlight the idea of deconstruction and reconstruction of form.

three was considered to be at the front line of ’Superflat’, the newest contemporary art movement in Japan. The super vivid colour appearance of the works stand out not only in delivering the messages of contemporary Japanese social state and gender, but also emerging the issues by criticizing Japanese over sizing consuming cultures. three indicates kitsch or Japanese pop culture with cuteness and attractiveness in a way that it draws people closer to wanting more to fulfill the empty souls that lay beneath fun and enthusiastic Japanese contemporary culture. 

At the other end of the exhibition, three has repeatedly placed specific part of figures in resonating the visual culture and its historical notion in Japan since WWII which then related to sexual fetishism that both respond to objects and images. 

The exhibition “three is a magic number 15: Hypersweet” will be held on the first floor of Art Centre Bldg., SAC Gallery from 26 March until 28 June 2020.

three คือกลุ่มศิลปินรุ่นใหม่จากญี่ปุ่นที่กำลังถูกกล่าวถึงในขณะนี้ ด้วยผลงานที่หยอกล้อกับวัฒนธรรมป๊อบปูล่า ยุคที่อนิเมะ และมังงะได้รับความนิยมอย่างสูงและเผยแพร่ไปในหลายประเทศ ผลงานสื่อประสมที่โดดเด่นของ three คือตัวละครที่ถูกบีบแบน นำเสนอในสัดส่วนเดียวกับจอของสื่อดิจิทัล แท็บเล็ต โทรศัพท์ อย่างพอดี รวมถึงประติมากรรมการ์ตูนที่สร้างขึ้นด้วยเทคนิคการบีบหลอมตุ๊กตาโมเดล และการเฉือนตัดเพื่อแสดงรายละเอียดที่ถูกบีบอัดภายในของผลงาน 

ผลงานของศิลปินกลุ่ม three เป็นหนึ่งในคลื่นลูกใหม่ของกระแส Superflat ที่ยังเคลื่อนไหวในศิลปะร่วมสมัยของญี่ปุ่น เป็นสุนทรียภาพที่แตกต่างจากในภูมิภาคอื่นๆ ด้วยการซ่อนนัยยะทางสังคม เพศ ภายใต้สีสันที่จัดเจน ผลงานของศิลปินกลุ่ม three เป็นทั้งการยอมรับและวิพากษ์วิจารณ์วัฒนธรรมที่ขับเน้นความนิยมแบบสาธารณะที่มากเกินพอดี ไม่ว่าจะเป็นความน่ารัก น่าดึงดูด จากวัตถุในวัฒนธรรมป๊อบ ที่อบอวลไปด้วยรสนิยมสาธารณ์ (kitsch) เรียกร้องความสนใจให้เราเข้าไปสัมผัสกับจำนวนที่มากมายตรงหน้าเพื่อตอบสนองกับความว่างเปล่าที่หลบซ่อนอยู่ในวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัยของญี่ปุ่นอย่างน่าสนใจ 

นอกจากนี้ยังมีผลงานสื่อประสมจัดวางที่สื่อสารด้วยการซ้ำจำนวนมหาศาล โดยเฉพาะเทคนิคการเฉือน ตัด และขับเน้นอวัยวะเฉพาะส่วนของตุ๊กตาโมเดล ผลงานของพวกเขาสะท้อนภาพวัฒนธรรมทางสายตา (visual culture) ที่มีพัฒนาการมาตั้งแต่หลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 ระบาดมาสู่อาการคลั่งไคล้ที่สัมพันธ์กับรสนิยมทางเพศ (sexual fetishism) ซึ่งตอบสนองกับวัตถุและภาพอย่างพิสดาร
