The Marriage of Sang Thong: by Vipoo Srivilasa

Vipoo Srivilasa is back to host a new exhibition in Thailand for the first time in the last 4 years as a successor to the crowd-pleasing Red-eared Slider exhibition at SAC Gallery in 2016 with the name of “The marriage of Sang Thong”— an exhibition dense with global-stage controversies that touch upon same-sex marriage (LGBTQ) which has a direct impact to the artist, who meticulously portrayed the incident with a classic Thai mythology ‘Sang Thong’ where he narrates us through multidimensional story accompanied by a handful of adorable, mild and dream-like sculptures crafted with a combination of techniques and all-new materials including bronze, wood and solid glass in total of more than 50 pieces all the way from Australia. “The marriage of Sang Thong” is a big-scale exhibition taken place both at SAC Gallery from 23rd November 2019 – 19th January 2020 and Rosewood Bangkok hotel 6th November 2019 - 4th January 2020 with Art Afternoon Tea session.

Thai-born with Australian nationality, Vipoo Srivilasa lives and widely acclaimed from his artistic journey in Australia. He grasps international attention from worldwide extensiveness of exhibitions and grand prizes from countless international art contests such as 44th Muswellbrook Art Prize Ceramic, National Sports Museum Basil Sellers Creative Arts Fellowship 2018 and was a finalist of this year’s The Whitegold International Ceramic Prizes in England. Vipoo also appears on various global publications such as Art Review, a top-tier art magazine with subscriptions across the globe—Asian Art News, a front-row magazine in Asian art. This established artist is looked-after by 3 most renowned galleries in Australia and 1 in England. He often spends his time as a mentor in many workshops including International Ceramic Biennale in South Korea and currently has his art permanently displayed at ICONSIAM exclusively on large scale.

From the topic of gender and sexual diversity, comes a wide range of new materials selected besides ceramic which is the primary material of the artist since the beginning. Vipoo is inspired by the approval of same-sex marriage in Australia where he can lawfully get married—it urges him to bring Sang Thong as a foundation to recollect the story of a striving for undefeated love. Featured artworks in “The marriage of Sang Thong” including carved bronze sculptures that individually convey 10 important incidents of same-sex marriage movements such as Stonewall incident—when a group of gay community created gay rights awareness in New York in 1969, and ‘Yes’ campaign of Australia in 2017. The artist also showcases a movement emerged within Thailand in the work called ‘1956’, and a follow-up that hopes to bring same-sex marriage to the country in ‘2020’. All the works are delicately crafted into numerous characters from Sang Thong.   

In “The marriage of Sang Thong”, visitors will be greeted by a parade of glamorous sculptures varied in shapes, colours and materials with a unique characteristic that brought the artist a global recognition. All characters are sculpted to convey dearness, liveliness and mildness—they represent a pure innocent of imagination, at the same time, reflect a strong spirit to bring equality toward every love. SAC is proud to be in a collaboration with Rosewood Bangkok, a five-star hotel located in Bangkok’s downtown to introduce Art Afternoon Tea session that comes with assorted desserts by an french chef who reimagines Vipoo’s art pieces to celebrate a diversity of love. This special event took place on the 7th floor of the hotel with a display of various mesmerising sculptures on the 3rd floor.

วิภู ศรีวิลาศ กับการกลับมาแสดงงานในประเทศไทยอีกครั้งในรอบ 4 ปี หลังจากความสำเร็จกับนิทรรศการ เต่าแก้มแดง ณ เอส เอ ซี แกลเลอรี เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2559 มาคราวนี้กับ “วิวาห์พระสังข์” ที่มีเนื้อหาเข้มข้นถึงประเด็นปัญหาระดับโลกอันกระทบกับชีวิตจริงของเขา ในเรื่องการแต่งงานของคู่รักเพศเดียวกัน (LGBTQ) บอกเล่าผ่านนิยายคลาสสิคของไทยเรื่อง สังข์ทอง ด้วยรูปลักษณ์เปรียบเสมือนนิทานภาพสามมิติจากตัวละครหลากหลายที่มีคาแร็คเตอร์น่ารัก นุ่มนวล ชวนฝัน ในรูปแบบประติกรรมหลากเทคนิคผสานวัสดุต่างๆ ตื่นตากว่าที่เคยทำมาทั้งหมด ไม่จะเป็นวัสดุ ทองแดง ไม้แกะสลัก และ แก้วใส จำนวนกว่า 50 ชิ้น ส่งตรงมาจากประเทศออสเตรเลีย  “วิวาห์พระสังข์” เป็นนิทรรศการใหญ่จัดแสดงถึงสองที่ คือ เอส เอ ซี แกลเลอรี ระหว่างวันที่ 23 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2562 – 19 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2563 และ โรงแรม โรสวูด กรุงเทพฯ ระหว่างวันที่ 6 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2562 – 4 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2563 ที่มีการจัดกิจกรรม Art Afternoon Tea อีกด้วย

วิภู ศรีวิลาศ เป็น ศิลปินเชื้อชาติไทย สัญชาติออสเตรเลีย ที่ใช้ชีวิตและทำงานจนมีชื่อเสียงเป็นอย่างมากในประเทศออสเตรเลีย รวมถึงได้รับการยอมรับในระดับนานาชาติ จากการแสดงงานมาแล้วมากมายทั่วโลก และรางวัลการประกวดศิลปกรรมนานาชาตินับไม่ถ้วน อาทิ 44th Muswellbrook Art Prize Ceramic, National Sports Museum Basil Sellers Creative Arts Fellowship ในปี พ.ศ. 2561 และล่าสุดในปีนี้กับการเข้าชิงรอบสุดท้ายของ The Whitegold International Ceramic Prizes ที่ประเทศอังกฤษ วิภูได้รับการเผยแพร่บนสื่อสิ่งพิมพ์และออนไลน์ทั่วโลก เช่น Art Review นิตยสารศิลปะระดับท็อปของโลกที่มีผู้อ่านมากมาย และ Asian Art News นิตยสารแนวหน้าด้านศิลปะในทวีปเอเชีย เป็นต้น รวมถึงยังมีแกลเลอรี่ที่มีชื่อเสียงในออสเตรเลียถึง 3 แห่ง และอังกฤษอีกหนึ่งแห่ง เป็นตัวแทนดูแลศิลปินอีกด้วย นอกจากนี้ เขามักจะได้รับเชิญเป็น Mentor ให้กับงาน workshop ต่างๆ เช่น International Ceramic Biennale ประเทศเกาหลีใต้ และปัจจุบันยังมีผลงานชุดพิเศษขนาดใหญ่ติดตั้งแสดงถาวรที่ ICONSIAM อีกด้วย

จากเนื้อหาของการยอมรับต่อความหลากหลายทางเพศ ทำให้เกิดการสร้างงานด้วยหลายหลากวัสดุ นอกเหนือไปจากเซรามิกที่เป็นเทคนิควัสดุหลักของศิลปินมาโดยตลอด ศิลปินได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากการที่ออสเตรเลียได้ให้สิทธิการแต่งงานของเพศเดียวกัน ส่งผลให้ศิลปินได้มีโอกาสแต่งงานอย่างถูกต้องตามกฎหมาย จึงดึงเอาเรื่องสังข์ทอง มาเป็นโครงเพื่อเปรียบเทียบถึงการฟันฝ่าต่อสู้เพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งสิทธิ์ในการมีความรัก  สู่ผลงานชุดไฮไลท์ในนิทรรศการ “วิวาห์พระสังข์” คือ ประติมากรรมสลักลวดลายจากทองแดง ที่สื่อถึง 10 เหตุการณ์สำคัญในการเรียกร้องสิทธิของคู่รักเพศเดียวกัน เช่น ​เหตุการณ์ Stonewall ความตื่นตัวต่อสิทธิของเกย์ที่เกิดขึ้นที่เมืองนิวยอร์ค ในปี 1969 หรือ แคมเปญ Yes ที่เกิดในออสเตรเลียเมื่อปี 2017 และมีผลงานสำคัญที่เชื่อมโยงกับประเทศไทยด้วย ในผลงานชื่อ 1956 และ 2020 ที่แสดงถึงความหวังที่ประเทศไทยจะให้สิทธิการแต่งงานของเพศเดียวกัน ผลงานทั้งหลายนี้ได้ถูกเล่าผ่านตัวละครต่างๆในเรื่องสังข์ทอง

ภายในนิทรรศการ “วิวาห์พระสังข์” นี้ ผู้ชมจะได้เห็นหมู่มวลประติมากรรมตุ๊กตาทรงเสน่ห์หลากรูปทรง สีสัน ลวดลายและวัสดุต่างๆกัน แต่ทรงไว้ด้วยคาแร็คเตอร์เฉพาะตัวที่สร้างชื่อเสียงระดับโลกให้แก่ศิลปิน ซึ่งมีความน่ารัก สดใส ละมุนละไม สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงจินตนาการอันใสซื่อบริสุทธิ์ มีชีวิตชีวา แต่แฝงไปด้วยสปิริตแห่งการต่อสู้เพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งความรักที่เท่าเทียม นอกจากนี้ เอส เอ ซี ยังมีความภูมิใจที่ได้ร่วมงานกับโรงแรมโรสวูด กรุงเทพฯ โรงแรมห้าดาวกลางกรุง โดยได้เชฟขนมชาวฝรั่งเศสที่จะมารังสรรค์ขนมหลากหลายรสชาติเพื่อสื่อถึงความรักอันหลากหลาย โดยตีความจากผลงานของวิภู ศรีวิลาศ นำเสนอผ่านกิจกรรมพิเศษอย่าง Art Afternoon Tea บนชั้น 7 ของโรงแรมและการแสดงประติมากรรมที่ห้องแสดงชั้น 3
